Jammu enough to counter separatists: Leela

The convener of Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti Leela Karan Sharma said today that Jammu people could have prevented exodus of Kashmir Pandits from the Valley in 1990s but at that time there was not much awareness about the separatists’ designs.
Appreciating the role of Kashmiri Pandits in the recent agitation on Amarnath Shrine land issue, Sharma said that a clear message has gone across the country that the nationalist forces in Jammu or strong enough to defeat the separatists. He, however, regretted about what he described as weak policies of the Center in dealing with the separatists forces in Kashmir Valley.
The group that led the agitation in Jammu to press for land transfer to Amarnath Shrine Board today alleged that both the Centre and the state government had tried to crush their "nationalistic movement".
"Though union and state governments tried their utmost to crush the movement launched by nationalist people of Jammu to restore land to the Board, their gameplan fell through before the resolve of the masses, who fought a protracted battle for over two months to achieve the goal," Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangrash Samiti (SAYSS) Convener Leela Karan Sharma said.
Speaking at a seminar organised by Panun Kashmir, an outfit representing displaced Kashmiri pandits, Sharma claimed "had the people of Jammu been aware against the secessionist and separatist forces as they are today, there would have been no mass exodus of pandits from Kashmir in 1989-90".
Bar Association president BA Slathia said "pandits were thrown out under a big conspiracy and their exodus was the result of the communal mindset of the separatists."
In his welcome address Panun Kashmir convener Agnishekhar said the people of Jammu have "fought a battle not only for the Jammu but also for the entire nation".
The SAYSS suspended its agitation on Aug 31 after signing an agreement with the government which allowed the Shrine Board to use the land in Kashmir during the yatra period.
