| PDP wants polls deferred, not boycotting | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 9
Though political parties that matter in Jammu and Kashmir have favoured postponement of election, during their discussion with the Election Commission, deferment of the poll in Jammu and Kashmir is being ruled out. Official sources said that the Election Commission, besides the Government of India favour elections on time as any postponement would encourage separatists in keeping the violence level up for further deferment. Sources said that if the elections were not held by the middle of November the separatists may not allow it to be held for another four to six months. Even the security and intelligence agencies have, in their reports, conveyed to the Union Home Ministry that the poll dates should not be postponed as holding of the poll could prove an antidote to the violence having been triggered by the separatists in the Kashmir valley. Reports said that the EC may decide on the poll schedule after its members have a discussion with the Director General Police and the Home secretary of Jammu and Kashmir. Members of the Commission are to visit the state also to have an on the spot assessment of the security situation. In the meantime, the PDP leadership has denied reports that the party may not participate in the elections if they were not postponed. General Secretary of the PDP, Nizam-ud-Din, Bhatt today said that "if we favoured postponement of the poll it was done in the context of the disturbing situation in the Kashmir valley" .He said "we want maximum participation in the poll process by the people which may not be possible in the current situation. In reply to a question he said the PDP will participate in the election whenever they are held. |
