As we are just emerging out of the 62 days of Jammu stir launched by the Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti in connection with land row we are not yet aware of the long term gains of such a upsure but there is no doubt that the people of Jammu are no more what they were before the stir. There is also no doubt that Land Row was only a flash point. Hats off to the people of Jammu for the successful conduct of the agitation.
The biggest gain, of course, is finding the identity and self belief which are battle winning factors. Another most important gain is communal harmony against all provocations by the Kashmiri leadership not only by the separatists like Hurriyat but also by the political parties who even converted the interruption into blockage of Jammu - Srinagar High Way. This time even the Muslims joined their Hindu brethren in supporting their demand for the land for Shri Amarnath and also maintained communal harmony. They have even rejected the old myth of 2½ districts of Hindu areas, a dangerous slogan which reminds people of partition based on religion and stirred by Mehbooba but not responded by the people of Jammu this time. Through this agitation Jammu has disproved all such old myths and proved many new beliefs and adages which will not only help Jammu and the State but also the whole the country.
This agitation was a unique and unprecedented in the history of the sub continent where the people of the region enblock irrespective of religion, caste and community, old, young, women and children with out any political leadership conducted successfully against all odds through out for 62 days in which there was no personal stake of anyone, yet everyone participated without expecting any direct gains. The whole region suffered for 62 days; labourers and daily wagers. The poorest were the worst sufferers but none complained, why” Because they thought the Lord Shiva had himself stirred them which happens when the tyranny (discrimination) crosses all limits. All the 61 years of indignation suffered through discrimination motivated them to make it a fight to the finish and they have succeeded. In the process they have discovered themselves and also taught a lesson or two to the media which never bothered about the sentiments of Jammu people and have also helped the govt to care for the sentiments of the nationalists and patriots particularly when pitched against the anti nationals and separatists. This is the biggest gain of this agitation for India.
Now whether they can consolidate the new found ‘Mantra’ into political unity like Ladakhis will depend on the next struggle starting with the delimitation of Assembly seats. Undoubtedly the final answer is a strong regional party of Jammu in which Muslims as seen during the agitation will have to leave the Kashmir centric parties and join the regional party which could be ‘Jammu Unites Front’ and get the Delimitation of Assembly seats immediately preferably before the next election. Only then they can hope to get their due with self respect and dignity. The time has come and they have proved through this agitation that they can do it. If they do they will script a new chapter in the history which might be a turning point in governance of the country with multi religions/ and multi castes and multi dimensional interests. |
