| Crisis deepens in Congress | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 9
Crisis has further deepened in the state unit of Congress ahead of elections as a section of leaders in Kashmir have called for stern action including expulsion of senior vice president and former Minister Abdul Gani Vakil. Vakil, it may be mentioned here, is a staunch loyalist of the former Chief Minister and Ghulam Nabi Azad and a hate campaigner of Pradesh Congress Committee president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz. He had launched a scathing campaign and indulged on gross indiscipline immediately after Soz was named as President of Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Congress. Now Soz has emerged power in Congress, and Vakil’s patron Ghulam Nabi Azad faces a rough weather after the inept handling of Amarnath land transfer issue, the Soz lobby is now gunning for Vakil. Demanding expulsion of former minister Abdul Gani Vakil from the party for his alleged "breach of discipline", senior leaders of Pradesh Congress Committee today threatened to protest. "We appeal AICC President Sonia Gandhi to expel Abdul Gani Vakil from the organisation otherwise we would be compelled to raise the banner of revolt," a statement issued by senior Congress leaders after an emergency meeting at party headquarters here said. In the meeting, chaired by senior Vice President Mohammad Muzaffar Parray, members expressed their deep anguish over the continuous "breach of discipline" by Vakil and felt that the time was ripe for partymen to work together and help build the party so that it could emerge successful in ensuing elections. "But this is most unfortunate that Vakil has embarked upon the strategy to disseminate false propaganda against party leadership solely to weaken the organisation at the behest of some vested interests," the statement said. |
