| Questions on JU select list | | 23,000 applicants searching their names | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 9
Uncertainty is prevailing among hundreds of aspirants as questions are being raised over a selection list of ancillary staff of the University of Jammu. Earlier this year, the University of Jammu had advertised several positions for different nature of posts which also included the orderlies, security guards and drivers. Interviews were conducted immediately after the application deadline but the select list was never released for next six months. Several applicants have alleged, which has also been substantiated by sources, that the “list” has indeed been “released” but in a doubtful and discreet manner. There was already an uncertainty among the applicants but the manner in which list has been finalised has further cast aspersions on the selection process. The Registrar of the University of Jammu nearly confirmed this saying that two months of shut down could not allow the administration to screen all applications. He told EARLY TIMES that “as many as 23,000 applications were received for different posts and it was not possible for the committee to screen all of those at this stage when were in urgent requirement of staff”. The Registrar, GS Sambyal however claimed that the selection process was entirely fair and can be cross checked even though he admitted that the selection list was never released and applicants were informed about their selections. He said when University resumed activity after the agitation and shutdown, a majority opinion in the selection committee suggested picking up candidates with high merit in view of immediate requirement of staff at the Campus. Sources said that after six months of delay, the select list was never actually released even a selections have been made and some people have been made to join. Making the entire selection process doubtful, the University authorities last Saturday and Sunday (when the campus is closed) started calling up some applicants confirming their selection for different posts. “Those selected by the University selection committee were called up on phone on Saturday and Sunday and made to join on the holidays”, said the sources. No selection list was either released in the press or pasted at the University notice board. The word, however, leaked out and several applicants started pouring in the administrative block on Monday and Tuesday to confirm about their selections. Interestingly, on officer in the University administration had anything to say about the selection list even though most of those selected discreetly have joined on last Saturday and Sunday. A delegation of applicants who had applied and were interviewed for the posts of orderlies and security guards approached the EARLY TIMES office this afternoon with their grievance. Several attempts were made to call up the officers in University administration but there was no response on the landline telephone numbers. Sources said that the University had worked out criteria to offer priority to those who have already been working with the University on temporary basis for last several years. This criterion too, sources claimed, has not been adhered to. Many such applicants who have been working with the University for last eight to ten years have been ignored while those who had just two to three years of service have been selected. The select list had not been released by the University authorities till late Saturday afternoon. |
