| Director Tourism convenes meeting to assess losses to Tourism industry | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 10
To workout the modalities for the compensation package for the losses incurred by the Tourism Industry during Jammu bandh in the month of July-August 2008, a meeting was convened by Director Tourism,Jammu Sarita Chauhan, here today. Joint Director Tourism, Jammu,. S. M. Sahni, Dy Director Tourism and representative of Hotel and Restaurant Associations, Lodges Association, AJTA, TAAJ-Jammu Chapter, Association of Tour Operators, travel agents, pony/pithoo associations of Jammu, Katra and Patnitop attended the meeting. Chauhan asked the various Associations related to Tourism industry to nominate one joint representative who will negotiate with the Working Group. She said that a Working Group has been constituted by the government to work out appropriate packages of financial assistance to compensate losses of the transport sector, trade and industries sector, horticulture sector, hoteliers and tour operators of both Jammu and Kashmir division during the recent agitation. Chauhan asked the Tourism industry to workout a realistic projection which the department can place before the working group adding that the meeting is the first step of assessing the losses suffered by people associated with tourism industry. She sought the cooperation of all the key players of tourism industry to work jointly to give boost to tourism in the region. Stating that government is focusing on developing Jammu as an independent tourist resort, Chauhan said that the real challenge before the department is to divert the pilgrims thronging to Katra to other tourists destination of the region. Development of new and modern infrastructure at tourist spots like Patnitop, Reasi and Kud, promoting adventures expeditions to the virgin valleys of Bhaderwah, Kishtwar and Bani are being emphasized to promote tourism in the area, she informed. Speaking on the occasion, the representatives of hotel/travel industry apprised that they had incurred losses worth Rs.500 crore during the month of July and august. |
