Former Minister Jugal Kishore calls on Lt Governor

JAMMU, Jan 7: A public delegation led by former Minister Jugal Kishore Sharma called on the Lt Governor and apprised him of various developmental issues of Katra and Reasi as well as the prevailing Vaishno Devi yatra scenario due to heavy restrictions at Lakhnapur despite announcement of series of unlockdowns.
Jugal Kishore Sharma while interacting with the Lt Governor laid stress on development of tourism sector of J&K, in particular paying serious attention towards the depleted Vaishno Devi Yatra earlier due to lockdowns and currently due to unwarranted restrictions at Lakhanpur.
He said that the militancy has already broken the backbone of tourism sector of J&K which once was the favourite destination for lakhs of tourists from within country and abroad but it was the yatra of Maa Vaishno Devi which provided some sort of respite to the sagging tourism industry of J&K. So, it is necessary to safeguard the only surviving tourist destination of this Union Territory by putting sincere efforts, he added.
Sharma urged the Lt Governor to direct the concerned authorities to set up a Covid testing facility for the Yatris at Katra instead of Lakhanpur so that the pilgrims get the requisite certification there itself.
He said such a mechanism will certainly boost up the falling numbers of Vaishno Devi pilgrimage as it will ensure a hassle free and smooth yatra for the pilgrims to the holy cave shrine.
He also sought welfare of local business unit owners of Katra in the wake of lockdown imposition and other issues of public importance. Sharma demanded to waive off electricity bills of commercial establishments of Katra for the lockdown period.
The former Minister also drew Lt Governor's attention towards the issues of the mining sector. The Lt Governor, while interacting with the delegation, observed that the UT Government is taking several measures for development of religious and tourist destinations and welfare of all the stakeholders. He assured the members of the delegation that all their genuine concerns projected by them would be addressed on merit.
