The State of Jammu & Kashmir possesses qualified coaches in almost every sports discipline and the game of Cricket is no exception. There are many trained coaches in the discipline of Cricket in our state, but some times one feels pity over the treatment they receive from highest cricketing body of the state, the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), as far as assignment of coaching camps to these local coaches is concerned.
Ignoring local coaches is not a practice in our State only but it is just a tip of an ice-berg, as it is a trend or a custom in many other states also and in India as a whole when coaching Team India comes into play. Bringing teachers and preachers from other states or other countries for help in any field- whether corporate, commercial, sports or educational, is in the psyche of Indians and we can never deviate from it, how persistent efforts we may make. We have fetish for foreign things. It may be any thing- game or gooseberry- whether good or bad. Without a second thought, eyes closed, we purchase them, adopt them, make them a part of our life, our culture. At the same time we discard `desi’, how much good, beneficial it may be. Perhaps, we are unaware of the fact that ‘desi zakham’ always needs ‘desi marham’ to cure.
Anyway, from the last 5 years, JKCA hired three well known coaches in Devinder Arora (Punjab), Partha Sarthi Sharma (Mumbai) and Jyanti Lal (Maharashtra) for imparting training to State’s Ranji Trophy Team but going through the performance graph of this team, one can observe that it has drastically declined through all these years. The reason not being their lack of wisdom but failure to heal the already bruised psyche of cricketers of our State, as they (Coaches from other states) could hardly go into the philosophy of the psyche of local players.
It is only the local coaches who can understand the psyche of local players which was proved by a well known former cricketer (though not a qualified coach) who was assigned the coaching job for just two Ranji Trophy matches by winning one and drawing the other one. But after coming back from the tour he was omitted from the job as JKCA wanted to please some body else. At the bigger circuit of the game you need a Man Manager rather than a coach and local coaches who know ins and outs of local cricketers and are actually architects of their fundamental skills always command respect from the players, so simply can be good Man Managers. Despite this fact, our state repeatedly makes mistakes of hiring coaches from other states to train local cricketers.
No doubt, it may be a trend in other states also and in our country as well but at the end of the day one gets a feeling that it is certainly a bad business. Delhi Ranji Trophy Team performed fabulously in the last season in both forms of the game under the guidance of local coach Vijay Dahiya but this year they are aiming to hire Shane Warne’s mentor “Jenner” as Dahiya’s replacement to train Delhi Team for the reasons better known to DDCA Officials only. Same is the case with the Coaching assignments for Team India. If at all, my recall is right, there are about 30 Level-III Coaches in our Country, but Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hardly cares for their future and their statements hardly cut much ice before the BCCI Officials, who relish to distribute money among the foreigners. Results are evident. Performance of Team India under Greg or Gary and Rajput or Ravi tells the entire story.
Now, talking about our state cricket, the time is ripe to utilize the services of local coaches from Junior (including girls) to Ranji Trophy Level and spend four times lesser money on them rather than hiring big names for big perks and bad results. It is pertinent to mention here that Partha Sarthi some two years back was hired for Rs.95,000/- per month and the same must have been the story with Jyanti and Arora. Otherwise, the promising players like Ian Dev Singh, Parveez Rasool, Manik Gupta and Mohd.Mudasar etc are the products of local coaches only. It is the sheer- dint of hard work and wisdom of these coaches which makes these promising cricketers to blossom at the bigger scene.
The JKCA rather than pleasing the affiliated members, without a second thought, should sent already trained coaches of the state for Level-I, Level-II and if they qualify even for Level-III Courses to achieve more perfection in scientific knowledge like Bio-Mechanics, Kinesiology etc. Such coaches can do wonders for Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association in the future and that is the only way out to cure ‘desi zakham’ with a ‘desi marham’.
