| Congress in distress and disarray | | | Nirbhay Jammual
Even after its disaster,which it suffered following upheaval over the land revocation and then on land restoration,the state unit of the Congress is yet to learn to emerge as a united team when the elections are round the corner.Hitherto it used to be factions within factions.But now His Master's Voice,as Abadul Gani Vakil,a former Social Welfare Minister,is called has hit the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz,below the belt.Vakil has set in motion voices against Soz and his supporters without without caring about the impact it can have on the organisation.He is for one man for one post.He seems to have forgotten that he too was holding two posts,one as Minister and the other vicepresident of the PCC.
Thinking that he is His Master's (Azad's) voice he had the right to hold two posts but this right cannot be exercised by Soz.He seems to have forgotten that Soz's predecessor,Peerzada Mohd.Syed,too held two posts,Minister for Education and that of PCC Presidentship.What does he actually wants.Vakil wants his Master,Azad,to be the PCC Chief.He thinks Azad is a better claimant for the post after he resigned as Chief Minister.Possibly Vakil believes that he and his organisation are on cloud nine after the rapid erosion in the strength of the PDP.Mistakenly or otherwise Vakil had come to believe that in the next election the PDP was the main threat to the congress in the Kashmir valley.He does not agree with those who blame Azad for having presided over the liquidation of the Congress in Jammu and KashmirHow ? First he acted like a headmaster riding rough on party MLAs and ministers,besides senior leaders.It is not my outlook.It is what Congress leaders,except Vakil,tell me.They say that the way Azad blessed the revocation of the land diversion order it rocked the Congress in its stronghold of Jammu.
But it can be a biased attitude if Azad is accued of weakening the Congress.As Chief Minister he preferred good governance to strengthening the organisation he belongs to.Congress leaders were annoyed with him because he wanted to run the state administration in a way as could improve the lot of the people in the state.In his idea of betterring peoples' lot he may have upset congress leaders who were aspiring for political and monetary gains.This is one side of the story.The other side is that he has used Vakil fully for sullying the image of those whom Azad would not like including those ffrom whom Azad felt a threat to his political power.He found himself under threat from Mufti Mohd.Sayeed and that is why he encouraged Vakil for giving vent to rancour against the Muftis.In the same way Vakil seems to have blessings from his Master in denoucing Soz who is seen by Azad as his potential threat.And Vakil has used a number of adjectives while describing Soz as inaccessible to party leaders.Vakil has found Soz spending more time in Delhi than in Srinagar when the reality is that even as Union Minister he has not only been available to people and party men but has been spending days together in Kashmir addressing public rallies and party meetings.
But neither Azad nor Vakil knows it that when a family is in distres the members sit together and face adversity jointly.If a family in distress drift apart the family is likely to collapse under the weight of adversity.The Congress is in distress and if people like Vakil and Azad raise the banner of revolt or the level of disensions the party may totter before going to the battle of ballot.when already several senior Congress leaders have denounced Vakil. |
