BJP URGES EC TO HOLD ASSEMBLY POLLS IN TIME IN J&K
9/11/2008 11:10:38 PM

Jammu | Sep 11

Senior BJP state Vice-President & Chief Spokesperson Prof. Hari Om on Thursday strongly urged the Nirvachan Sada to hold elections in the state on time so that the people are able to return to the assembly representatives of their own choice and have duly-elected government in place by November.
The state BJP leader also took strong note of the reported briefing by the senior state officials where they made an extra effort to impress upon the Election commission to delay the polls depriving it of the moral authority to make an on ground assessment of the prevailing law and order situation. Prof Hari Om hoped that ECI would put its foot down and go ahead with the election process. He said such a bold stroke on its part would send a right signal across the country that it means business and that it has no space whatever for those in its democratic scheme of things who are seeking to use the election issue to make the Union Government announce major concessions before elections aimed at diluting the Indian sovereignty in Kashmir and enabling Pakistan to promote its nefarious agenda in this strategic part of the country.
He said if the commission failed to hold elections in October-November this year would simply mean a concession to Kashmir-based separatists and communal forces, who are against any electoral exercise in Kashmir as they see in the initiation of a democratic process their own destruction, downfall and marginalization.
Prof. Hari Om held the Congress, the NC and the PDP responsible for vitiating the impending electoral exercise by putting forth spurious arguments against elections at this point in time and persuading the authorities in New Delhi and the State's Civil Secretariat not to support the efforts of the ECI in this regard. "These parties, who have betrayed the people of the State and communalized and regionalized everything, cannot deprive the people of their natural right to have a government of their own choice. They are opposing elections for the simple reason that they cannot face the electorate they themselves alienated by their acts of omission and commission," said the BJP Spokesperson, adding "elections are imperative in the state to win back the people's confidence."
He said the opposition of the Congress, the NC and the PDP to electoral exercise is ill-intentioned and asserted that the basic reason behind their opposition has stemmed from the fact that all these formations are in complete disarray and that they are not only involved in factional fights, but also organizationally ill-prepared for taking the plunge in the crucial electoral arena.
