Mainstream political parties have started drawing and redrawing their strategies for winning the support of voters who will be much sought after force as the dates for the Assembly poll draw near.Senior leaders of different political parties are seen scratching their bald heads for finding juicy slogans and ideas which could catch the eye, if not the imagination of the voters. They know that voters are a clever lot. They have got an opportunity to keep the contesting candidates guessing.By now voters have learnt the trick of keeping their cards close to their chest. They are neither prepared to annoy any vote seeker nor befriend him beyond a limit.Politicians also know the art of influencing,if not duping, the voters. And the Congress has a plan of framing a slogan "vote for Congress is vote for work culture and good governance."The Congress has tried this tool between 2005 and middle of 2008.It wants to repeat it though it had not achieved any success. Its leadership believes that as its power share holder the PDP raised hurdles. The PDP has its slogans "vote for PDP is vote for self-rule where there is no room for diverting any land to the Amarnath Shrine Board."Its arch political rival, the National Conference is not prepared to get caught napping. Its slogan is "vote for National Conference is vote for autonomy which can ensure its leadership supremacy over judiciary, legislature, executive and the press." Its leadership believes that the slogan of autonomy had enabled it to win the 1996 election. It is a different matter that it failed to regain power in 2002 election when it had not discarded the autonomy slogan.Hurt by no response from either the Election Commission or the Government of India the Panthers Party has coined a slogan "vote for Panthers Party is vote for delimitation."It has a purpose. Its leadership believes that out of 37 seats in the Jammu region the party had won four seats in 2002 poll.If there are more constituencies it could win more seats. Riding high on the land settlement wave the BJP's slogan is "vote for BJP is vote for the repeal of Article 370."In 2002 election the BJP had not given up this slogan but it could win only one seat.Possibly people in the state no longer feel enthused over the demand for abrogation of Article 370.But the BJP leadership is not prepared to delink itself from its tradition. Its one time friend and now a rival the Praja Parishad' has a slogan which the the Sangh Parivaar had used years ago.The Praja Parishad has this slogan "Vote for Praja Parishad is vote for one Vidhaan, one Nishaan and one Pradhaan"It wants the destiny of the people to be guided by the Constitution of India and its national flag.It is opposed to the plough because it is basically a party of traders and intellectuals. Peeved over the machinations of the Muftis the Jammu Kashmir Democratic Party is to raise a slogan "vote for it is vote for end to family rule."So if this slogan catches the imagination of the voters the PDP could be mauled to the delight of Ghulam Hassan Mir.For smaller parties slogan raising is their inherent right. For the CPIM and the CPI it is "vote for leftists is vote for death of riches."For the VHP it "vote for VHP is vote for world Hindu unity."For the Nationalist Congress Party it is "Vote for NCP is vote for nationalist forces."For others including RJD,Samajwadi Party,State Morcha slogans vary from Garib Rath to equlity to bifurcation of the state.Let us see which slogan is palatable to the voters. |
