| ‘2 ½ districts can’t decide’ | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Sep 11
Reacting to the historical agitation of Jammu which underlined the extent of regional discrimination and political humiliation, the Peoples Democratic Party today named the region as “two and half districts” and vowed thwart attempts at undermining empowerment of Kashmir Valley. Senior PDP leader and former Minister for Finance, Tariq Hameed Karra "two and a half districts cannot chart the destiny of the State nor should they dictate to the people of Kashmir valley and Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts as they have been trying to do," senior PDP leader and former minister Tariq Hameed Karra said in a statement. Karra said there has been undue appeasement of these "two and a half districts" and time has come for the people in other parts of the State to rise against the administrative and economic subjugation they have been forced to over the years. "Having almost disempowered Kashmiris administratively and economically, these two and a half districts are now on to accomplish the sinister plan of disempowering them politically as well," he said, adding, Kashmir, although having a strong and productive economic base, has been rendered a massive consumer market for the Jammu products through a sustained campaign of economic subjugation and disempowerment. "The Jammu business cartels that flourished after the eruption of militancy in 1990 are unnerved by the Kashmir's economic rejuvenation and have started conspiring to sabotage the same," he said adding the recent economic blockade against Kashmiris was a part of the same notorious plan. Karra said BJP leader, Hari Om has audaciously unleashed Jammu's anti-Kashmiri mindset, when he recently stated that the opening of Srinagar-Muzafarabad Road for trade would hit the economic interests of Jammu. "It is clear from Om's statement how fiercely the Jammu business lobby is bent upon subverting opening of not only the Srinagar-Muzafarabad and Poonch-Rawalakote roads, but even the Mughal Road and the Anantnag-Simthan-Kishtwar roads for the movement of people and goods," Karra said. Kashmiris in general specially those in Poonch, Rajouri and Doda have suffered immensely because of the Jammu hegemony and the clandestine process of disempowering people in these areas has to stop now, he said. "All the regions and sub-regions of the State must not only get proportionate political representation, but the development funds and jobs must also be distributed proportionately among all the regions and sub-regions of the State so that the injustices meted out to Kashmir and various other neglected areas at various levels are rectified to some extent," the PDP leader said. He said even the nominal presence of the Kashmiri officers in the administration is being phased out through various means including framing them through Vigilance Organization. Expressing surprise over the constitution of a Special Task Force for the development of Jammu city, Karra said the move is aimed at diverting developmental funds to Jammu as has happened during the previous Governor's regimes as well. He said the Governor N N Vohra must personally look into such crucial issues as at present there is almost negligible Kashmiri representation in the State's decision-making structure and a strong Jammu lobby in the bureaucracy. |
