Jammu | Sept 12

With the resumption of life to near normal in Jammu after two-month long agitation, various establishments are counting their losses and making case for rehabilitation but one section is confused –parents of the school going children.
The students of private schools lost their studies during the months of agitation and now parents are being asked to pay the fees for the period when schools were shut. Schools have a ‘justifiable’ reason to charge the fees but strangely there is no word from the government on what to do on this account. Parents are appearing as a confused lot.
The agreement between the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti and the Government had concluded that all those sectors of economy which suffered losses during agitation shall be suitably rehabilitated. A Working Group headed by the Chief Secretary has already been constituted to look into all such grievances. “Schools, of course, are business establishments but instead of asking the government to mob up losses, the schools are turning to the parents”, said parent of a student who did not wish to be named.
Repeated attempts were made to contact the Director School Education Zahida Perveen Khan but she could not be reached till filing this story. However, the Joint Director Vinay Raina said that he does not have anything to say on the issue.
Rahul Gupta resident of Rehari, said students have been charged fees for these months. He said, these private schools should refund the fee to the students and instead ask the government for compensation.
“Already we have deposited the two months (i.e. during summer vacations) fees before the agitation now it is really difficult for us to deposit the fees again as we too have suffered a lot during this agitation”, said Mohinder, a resident of Purani Mandi.
“I am a shopkeeper and I have not earned a single penny during the past two months. Schools have also suffered similarly. We are not charging our customers for the goods we have not sold them, then why are the schools charging our children for the period during which they have not been imparted education. They should ask for compensation in a similar way as we have done”, said Reeta Sharma resident of Mast Garh.
Meanwhile, many parents feel that in a way the school managements were right on their stand. But they maintained that something should be done to refund certain percentage of fee. "The school managements should return atleast half the money
Gambhir Singh Charak Principal of Dogra Higher Secondary School and , said, “we have charged fees for July and August because we have to pay the salary to the teaching staff as well as all other non-teaching staff regularly for the entire year. He also added that till now there has not been any notice or order by the Director school Education or Chief Education officer for providing compensation in fees and if we have got any further order we have not any problem in implementing it.
Aditya Gupta, Joint Director MIER, aired similar views and stated that like we are compensating the loss to the students by providing extra classes and curtailing holidays where as for compensation in fees we are not forcing the parents to pay fees immediately if they can?t afford.
President School Association and Principal of Tiny Tots Deepak Handa said that they have provided compensation in transportation in which they have been charging only 10 months fare and have reduced on e month fare. When asked about any compensation in two months fees he said that till now they have not got any instructions or orders from Director School Education. If govt provides them nay compensation they will also provide relief in fees.
