| Pakistan's reaction to US plan meaningful | | | Nirbhay Jammual
Pakistan Government is peeved over the unilateral decision of the Bush Government to carry out strikes against the Talibans and the Al Qaeda on the Pakistan-Afghan border. The establishment in Islamabad is not as much annoyed over the American strikes against the terrorists inside Afghanistan territory. It has been irked by the American strikes on the terrorist inside the territory of Pakistan. The anger over the American strike was so high that the Army Chief,Gen. Afzal Kayani,on Wednesday said that Pakistan will not allow the coalition forces to make inroads inside Pakistan territory.Islamabad has directed its troops to retaliate if the US forces enter Pakistan.Yes,Gen. Kayani is not wrong. Why should Islamabad tolerate the American operations inside its territory even if such operations were meant for flushing out terrorists? If we study the other side of the story we may come to the conclusion that Pakistan should have welcomed these operations because it has now started getting tormented by the terrorists strike on vital Government and defence installations. It should have supported the American action as such action from a super power could have helped Pakistan to get rid of the menace of terrorism and the threat from the Talibans.During the last over one year Pakistan has carried out operations against terrorists camping on its borders with Afghanistan. But not much success was achieved becaue these exercies and operations seemed to be consmetic in nature.Possibly these operations were cosmetic in nature because Islamabad did not want to open a broad front with the Talibans and the men of the Al Qaeda. This is evident from the events that followed the installation of an elected Government.Since then on one side operations against the terrorists were launched on the other Islamabad has been making efforts for buying peace with the rebel groups. Here again the Government did not succeed. Another cause of irritation for Islamabad is that before the launch of the American strikes the US administration should have informed Pakistan in advance,if it did not think it necessary for Washington to secure prior permission from Islamabad.Islamabad had reasons for feeling annoyed because George Bush had stated that he had given permission to the coalition forces to conduct ground assaults inside Pakistan without permission. Bush Okay for the operations had been given in July. When the former President and military ruler,Gen. Parvez Musharraf, allowed the American troops bases inside Pakistan for carrying out strikes against the Talibans in Afghanistan noboldy in Pakistan had raised a finger.Gen. Musharraf had allowed the American forces to set up bases in Pakistan for two reasons. One,by doing this he succeeded in getting heavy monetary and military aid from the US Government.Secondly,Gen. Musharraf's position had been endangered by the rise of the Talibans in Afghanistan who could have posed a threat to the security and sovereignty of Pakistan. The reaction in Pakistan against the American action can be construed as Islamabad's disinterest in freeing the country from terrorists or it did not want to project itself as a meek country. It thinks tht end of terrorism in Pakistan will result in end of crossborder terroris. That way Pakistan will not be able to cause economic bleed of India. |
