| Inter-ministerial team surveys flood-hit areas, assess damage | | | JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 10 : To assess the damage caused by torrential downpour in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in those areas that were virulently affected by the incessant rains, a 9-member inter-ministerial team from the union capital today conducted extensive survey of flood-hit areas of the state. Detailing about the areas visited, Director Union Ministry of Power Ms. Anjuli Chandra and Member Ministry of Water Resources Mr. Samir Chaterjee, during their succinct interaction with media persons, said that the 9-member inter-ministerial group would conduct their own independent assessment about the damage caused to various sectors viz. agriculture, roads and buildings, educational institutions, health, PHE and irrigation, power, et al. Ms. Anjuli said that the inter-ministerial central team conducted both aerial and on-foot survey of the flood-hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir. She said in the winter capital city of the state, the team visited the areas affected by river Tawi's spate, namely, Nagrota, Sitlee Filtration Plant, Tawi Islands besides witnessing the damage caused at Mubarak Mandi and Panjtirthi. She said that the team would also be witnessing the damage caused by rise of waters in river Chenab and would visit Akhnoor too. When questioned on the extent of damage, the Director Union Ministry of Power said, 'definitely the damage is enormous in few areas, but the team is collecting all facts and data about it and would make its recommendations based on these collective details'. She said that each member of the inter-ministerial team would make his/her own assessment and judgement about the degree and specificity of damage. She said that the reports and recommendations thereafter would be submitted to Joint Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs Ms. Mitali Sen for further action. To another query regarding centre's allocation of a special flood-damage package to Jammu and Kashmir, Ms. Anjuli said that the central team would make explicit recommendations about it in their respective reports. The Director Union Ministry of Agriculture clarified that compensation and relief for the affected would be strictly governed by the norms framed by the centre in this regard under the national calamity fund. The central team also interacted with senior officers of various departments and sought details from them about their assessment of the damage caused to sectors being headed by them. In a meeting convened, this afternoon, the team held detailed deliberations with the Divisional Commissioner Jammu Mr. Pramod Jain, who detailed to them about the damage caused to various sectors. Mr. Jain described to the team about the Chief Minister's direction in making factual and correct evaluation of the damage caused by floods. He said that grass-root level functionaries i.e Chowkidars, Lambradars were directed to submit details about the nature and extent of damage in their respective areas. Deputy Commissioner Jammu Mr. Hirdesh Kumar Singh, Chief Engineer PHE Mr. V.K. Goswami, Chief Engineer R&B Mr. M.M. Sharma, Chief Engineer Power Mr. D.S. Pawar, Director Rural Development Mr. G.R. Bhagat, Director Agriculture Mr. Hakkal, Director School Education Mr. D.K. Vaid, Director Health Services Jammu Dr Jasbir Singh and Joint Director Information Mr. S.K. Sharma, who were present in the meeting also briefed the central team about the damage caused due to floods. They also presented visuals about the harm caused to various sectors and infrastructure. Earlier, the inter-ministerial team comprising Director Union Ministry of Power Ms. Anjuli Chandra and Representative from Union Ministry of Water Resources Mr. Samir Chaterjee, Representative Union Ministry of Agriculture Mr. A.K. Raina, and Member Planning Commission Mr. Amitabh Roy visited flood affected areas of Kathua. The team inspected affected areas of Chaba Chak on Ujh river, besides ascertaining the loss to property and standing crops. |
