| Hindi hain hum watan hai Hindustan hai hundustan hamara | | | Early Times Report Jammu | Sept 13
“Kitne Hue Bhaiya”, asks a swanky girl at an up market Gandhi Nagar utility store, “Churapan rupaiyee”, replies the salesman. The wonder struck girl looks on saying “Kitne……?” “Madam fifty-four rupees” and then understands the new age girl. Yes its pity but the fact that our younger generation does not understand or perhaps they just pose of being ignorant of our own National language, Hindi. 'Hindi hain ham, watan hai Hindustan hamara' that is the slogan to be parroted just as tokenism on the Hindi Divas every year, and then who cares? It's shocking that even in our own country we do feel embarrassed while speaking Hindi. We all should be proud of our Raj Basha. But still many are hopeful about the survival and adaptability of Hindi. “They all understand Hindi well, but just pretend, when you are enjoying Hindi theatres, songs and dramas, how can they befool us” says Abhimanyu Sharma, resident editor of Hindi daily 'Dainik Jagran'. “There is no threat to this language, even today there are many people who love Hindi, Indian readership survey itself reveals that around 3.56 Crore readers read Dainik Jagram alone”, says Abhimanyu. He seems confident while he speaks that no matter whatever they dress up but all are Hindi within, they all read and speak Hindi, but buying an English magazine may be a status symbol for them. But all do not share his opinion and feel some insecurity, Vivek Sharma; a young lawyer in Jammu tells 'Clients doubt our academics unless we speak English'. At home many of us, here in Jammu speak our mother tongue, but we do communicate in Dogri, Punjabi, Gojri or pahari with our elders, but we do hesitate to speak up the same language with our own small children and teenagers, we need to revive ourselves. The duplicity in our minds is the reason of bringing the status of language down, but in fact its bizarre, when some so called modern people of the society try to restrict the Hindi in the confined four walls of conference halls, but in practice a very little effort is made to bring the National language more popular among the masses. We do not have any reason to feel embarrassed while speaking Hindi, in fact it's a matter of pride for all of us to have a language which has the unique quality to accept and share words with other languages. ' I think, Hindi is the only unique language which is more popular in Indian sub-continent, many other languages borrow much from it' suggests Amrita Talwar, student of M.A Hindi and presently teaching Hindi language to the Middle Classes in a private academy. Still many of our Jammuites are ignorant of the values of Hindi, added our surprise when asked people especially students about 'Hindi Divas', unbelievable but the truth, people do not have knowledge about such a day 'Subegh Sharma, engineering student was annoyed when asked about the 'Hindi Divas' 'I have never heard such a day, I have idea about Rose day and Mother's day', replied Subegh. It's cursing that even the government is not doing enough for the spread of Hindi, though there are circulars and orders lying in the files, but on ground we all know the fact. The administrative machinery is perhaps not willing to work for the promotion of Hindi; otherwise it is impossible that even after being our national language we have not been able to bring the same respect and confidence amongst the Hindi speaking people. We also need to introspect ourselves and the society to realize that we do not have even a single Hindi Coaching center in Jammu, but we do have countless English teaching Institutions. The fault lies in our minds and not in the language, people need to come out of the narrow minds of neo-modern society of today. Many People are also afraid of regional languages troubling the national language, 'recent politics of languages in Mumbai signifies the spurt of an era of war of Languages in the country' tells Aneeta Jamwal, a retired teacher of Hr. Sec School in Jammu. |
