| High level central team deputed by Prime Minister to assess flood loss calls on CM | | | SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 10: Immediately after Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad talked to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on phone for deputing a central team for assessment of flood damages in Jammu and Kashmir so that adequate central assistance is released for the purpose, the high level team reached in the state yesterday. The inter-ministerial central team headed by Joint Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs Ms Mitali Sen Gavai called on Chief Minister here this evening and informed him about their assessment made on the spot after visiting flood affected areas of Pulwama, Anantnag and Budgam. They informed Mr. Azad that another team has visited flood affected areas of Jammu and made assessment of losses on the spot. Chief Secretary Mr. C. Phunsog, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Mr. Anil Goswami, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Mr. Basharat Ahmad, Commissioner/Secretary PHE Mr. Mehboob Iqbal, Secretary Rural Development Mr. M. S. Khan and Secretary Revenue Mr. Masood Samoon were among those who participated in the meeting. Chief Minister emphasized that urgent steps may be taken by the central government for release of central assistance so that the state is able to take adequate measures for providing succour and relief to the flood affected people. He said that thousands of acres of crop land has been affected, bridges and roads destroyed, public health engineering schemes affected and a mega filtration plant at Sitlee in Jammu washed away besides causing death of several persons. Mr. Azad said that intensity of floods was very severe this time as a result of unprecedented and continuous rains for two months in the state. He also informed the central team that the state government has chalked out a strategy for future so that flood damages are minimized. For this purpose, desilting of rivers and lakes will be taken in hand. Chief Minister thanked UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh who have all along taken personal concerns in the over all development of the state. Besides Prime Minister’s reconstruction programme schemes which are presently in progress, the centre has been liberal in helping the state to effectively meet the challenge of natural calamities, he added. He said that the people remember the unprecedented help provided by the central government, all the states and people of the country to Jammu and Kashmir during the deadly earthquake of October 8 last year. He hoped that this time also similar help will be provided to the state. |
