KVK Leh scientist conferred with Godavari Academy Impact award

LEH, Feb 4: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Leh, under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) got another distinction when Dr Parveen Kumar, Subject Matter Specialist (Agricultural Extension) at KVK-Leh was bestowed with Godavari Academy Impact award in the recently held online conference 'Anthropogenic impact on the environment, society and human health' of Environmental and Social Welfare Society, Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. The conference was organized with support from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, National Academy of Science, Bhopal Chapter, Zoological Survey of India, Madhya Pradesh Council for Science and Technology and other organizations. This award is presented to recognize individuals or groups for programmes that had a positive impact on the society.
Dr Kumar got this award for promoting vermicompost in the cold arid region of Ladakh as a means of sustainable agriculture, to augment farmers' income, to recycle farm and home waste, to maintain soil health and to prevent biodiversity loss. Based on his work in the region, he also presented a research paper on the topic, 'promoting self-reliance through vermicomposting: a study from Ladakh'. In his presentation he elaborated how the recycling of kitchen and farm waste into high quality organic manure reduces the cost of cultivation by 15-20 percent and a potent intervention for achieving the mission of 'Doubling Farmers Income' by 2022. His presentation also included case studies of successful farmers, farm women and youth from Leh district of Ladakh who have taken this as an enterprise and are getting handsome returns by selling vermiworms and vermicompost. His work was widely appreciated by the participants from different countries presented in the online conference.
