| Put off polls, says SP | | | Early Times Report Jammu | Sept 18 The Samajwadi Party (SP) today said the atmosphere is not conducive for holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and favoured they be held with parliamentary elections next year. "In so far as the elections to the state assembly is concerned, SP thinks the atmosphere for such an exercise at this juncture is not conducive," state party president Sheikh Abdul Rehman told reporters in Srinagar today. He said the law and order situation in the state has not improved to the extent that voters can freely vote and candidates can campaign without fear. "The elections, therefore, can be held along with the parliamentary elections in the country which will also help minimise the expenditure to the state exchequer and candidates as well," he added. Sheikh said in order to seek participation of the people in the elections, the government should not repeat the past mistakes and instead take all steps required to seek participation of the general public. "Elections to the state assembly held so far have been stage managed and were never conducted in a democratic manner. People of the state got no opportunity to elect their representatives. This had sent wrong signals across the world," the SP leader said. "Priority should not be on holding of elections but addressing people's grievances through dialogue with all concerned," he said. |
