| SPOs may get better deal | | | Early Times Report Jammu | Sept 18 The state Government is considering a plan for bettering the lot of Special Police Officers (SPOS) in Jammu and Kashmir. Under the proposed scheme, besides the raise in their monthly emoluments the Government plans to increase the exgratia relief in case some SPO dies while fighting militants. At present any SPO, who loses his life in militancy related violence, receives an exgratia amount to the tune of Rs one lakh. Official sources said that the Government is also considering either grant of medical allowance to the SPOs or reimburse the expenses incurred on treatment during operations against the militants. Till date SPOs are not entitled to this benefit. In certain cases the expenses on treatment and medicines are borne by the police Department. Number of SPOs interviewed said that "we are being associated with counter insurgency operations and still the exgratia relief amount is Rs. one lakh against Rs six lakhs in case of a police official if he gets killed in action." A senior police officer said that exgratia relief fixed by the Government for all ranks of police is Rs .three lakhs and another Rs. three lakhs are given from the Police welfare fund. These SPOs stated that they have to remain content with paltry emoluments of Rs.3000 per month. One of them said "we do not receive these fixed wages on time. At times we have to wait for two to three months." Official sources said that the Government was considering a plan under which the SPOs may either be placed in proper pay scale or a hike of Rs.1, 000 is sanctioned as increase in their monthly wages. Another plan under consideration was that selection of SPOs in the regular police services be given preference so that quota was fixed for the recruitment from the SPOs sector. There are over 20,000 SPOs and if 10 per cent quota was fixed for direct recruitment in the police it would benefit a large number of SPOs. |
