EARLY TIMES REPORT
ANANTNAG, Feb 12: In a surprising development, the principal constituents of Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD)- Peoples Democratic Party and National Conference-on Friday contested elections against each other to elect the President for Municipal Committee Bijbehara.
According to reports, both the political parties had forged an alliance to contest the municipal elections, however after winning 13 council seats out of 17, they failed to arrive at any consensus for electing President and Vice-President for the municipality which congress was ruling before the by-polls. PDP had won 8 seats and NC had won 5 seats while Congress and BJP had won two seats each respectively.
On Friday, reports said that according to the notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Anantnag for holding elections for the post of President, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bijbehara conducted the elections in presence of Executive Officer Municipal Committee Bijbehara and other officers.
The Peoples Democratic Party fielded Majid Nabi Khan while the National Conference fielded councilor Ghulam Hyder. "Out of 17, only 15 councilors remained present and participated in voting while two others remained absent. The National Conference candidate got six votes while PDP got 9 votes and won the election," SDM Bijbehara announced after the elections. According to reports, 2 BJP members abstained from voting while congress members supported National Conference however few councilors from PDP and NC resorted to cross voting during elections.
They said that despite holding a series of meetings with each other, the NC and PDP couldn't arrive at any consensus.
"Both the parties remained adamant to hold the post of President because of which the alliance broke and both the parties fielded candidates against each other," they added.
Bijbehara in particular and South Kashmir in general is being considered the bastion of Peoples Democratic Party however during the last few years particularly after the abrogation of Article 370; the party is losing its traditional vote bank to its key rival National Conference.
