| VO teams to plug food pilferage | | | Early Times Report Jammu | Sept 18 Always under line of fire for huge pilferage of commodities especially meant the poor, the department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution has risen to the occasion by constituting vigilance committees to monitor the supplies deep the at the level of tehsils and blocks. The department has constituted as many as 2012 Vigilance Committees at district, tehsil, block and panchayat level. These Committees would keep a close vigil on the dealers and ensure smooth and timely supply of essentials in all parts of the State. The department is also contemplating to set up Consumer Clubs in various colleges and schools for creating consumer related awareness amongst the masses and the department has identified 138 schools in the State for the purpose. In view of further strengthening the mechanism to control prices and quality of essentials, the CAPD has formed flying squads comprising officers of different departments which conduct regular inspections and raids. Till recently, the flying squads conducted 7022 inspections and 918 raids at different places, resulting in arrest of 14 persons. Show cause notices were issued to 59 persons, 52 FPS licences were suspended, 317 shopkeepers were challaned, FIRs lodged in 204 cases and a fine to the tune of Rs. 5.94 lakh realized. The Department has fixed a uniform scale of 13 Kgs. Of food-grains per head per month for both urban and rural areas under all categories, besides additional rations due as per aforesaid scale are being issued to rationees under BPL/AAY categories with strength of more than five members at APL rates in addition to 35 kgs of food-grains per family per month issued at subsidized rates. Similarly a uniform scale of 7 and 5 litres Kerosene oil per ration card per month for both urban and rural areas respectively has been fixed to facilitate the consumers. |
