One and half month on SMC fails to remove snow from footpaths, pavements of Srinagar

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 15: Srinagar city is vying to become one of the smart cities in India and the authorities are making lofty claims in this regard as well. The situation on the ground suggests that the development of the city is not on the agenda of the people at helm.
Around a month and half back the entire Kashmir valley including Srinagar district witnessed heavy snowfall leading to problems to people on multiple counts. One among them was the accumulation of snow with the same hindering the movement of people. Till date there are many areas in Srinagar where the snow has not been cleared from the pavements or footpaths.
"In the past the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) would hire tippers and remove the snow from the footpaths and pavements. However, this time around no such work was taken up due to which the snow continues to be present on the footpaths of the commercially important areas of Srinagar district," said Ali Mohammad, a resident of Gaw Kadal.
While having a cursory look one can easily find mounds of snow on Residency Road, Lal Chowk, Regal Chowk, Abi Guzar and many other areas of Srinagar district. The presence of snow mounds leads to inconvenience for the people and at some locations there is hardly space for two persons to walk on the footpath.
"The people should stop making claims for the development of Srinagar as a smart city. Instead they should take steps for making the movement of people hassle free in the entire district especially in areas that witness huge rush. It seems we are living in a Neolithic age where backwardness is the buzzword," said Mohammad Rafiq, a resident of Dalgate.
It would be in place to mention that Mayor SMC Junaid Azim Mattu had said that the Corporation does not have adequate machines to clear snow from the city roads, lanes and by-lanes. The SMC has failed to fulfill its mandate of clearing snow from the footpaths and pavements in the Srinagar district.
"If the administration of other districts can hire tippers and remove the snow what is stopping the SMC to do the same in Srinagar district. We have witnessed heavy snowfall in the past as well but then the people at helm would come up and take the necessary measures so as to provide relief to the people. However, the present dispensation has miserably failed to do its justice," said Gulzar Ahmad, a resident of Sanat Nagar.
