| Congressmen not happy over realignment | | Train to Qazigund | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 19: Within days after setting up of six member high powered committee by the railways to explore the new alignment in the Katra –Qazigund section of the Kashmir rail link project, local Congress leaders in the area, have started showing 'greener pastures' to people with an eye on the forthcoming assembly polls. Taking a stand against the observations made by few experts, leading to cancellation of work on the national railway project till new alignment was proposed by the expert committee, the Congress leaders have started playing politics and creating resistance groups among local residents to scuttle the whole drive. Addressing a public gathering at the project site former Minister and local MLA Aijaz Khan and MP Choudhary Lal Singh promised moon to the people of their constituency without themselves knowing the fate of the railway project. "We will not allow the railways to stop work on the project in this section. We are with you and we will ensure that any rail link to Kashmir will only pass through this area and we will not give up our claim, Congress leaders, who visited the project site on Katra Qazigund railway link, told gathering of local people". For last couple of days the Congress leaders have been trying their best to convince the people in the area who were either working on the project and have invested in allied works that they will not allow the railway ministry to change the alignment of the rail link keeping in view their interests. These congress leaders have been making sustained effort to build a campaign in their favour and projecting their own image as their saviors as they are fighting for their cause. What congress leaders have failed to highlight and communicate to the local people is the fact that the decision to stop the work on the project was taken only after the experts suggested to do so after concerns were raised over frequent roadblock and collapse of tunnels. The congress leaders are not interested in telling the people of the area that further investment on the project would go in dumps and it was not feasible to go ahead on the project on the basis of previous survey which has already been dubbed as inadequate by the railway expert committee. Official sources have also made it clear that," the existing alignment was causing problems and decision was taken to stop the work. |
