| Forces on alert after LoC firing | | Combing operation launched in Jammu | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 19: Militants today fired at the Line of Control in Sawjian sector of Poonch where no loss of life has been reported though security forces believed that ultras may have snaked in. Meanwhile, as Jammu continues on the terror radar, an intensive search operation was jointly launched by the Police and Army late this evening in area along Tawi and Mushriwala following reports of some militants having sneaked in. Security sources believed that the militants may have snaked in either through the Line of Control or International Border today. An another militancy related incident, Police today arrested three militant supporters of Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir here. Several hideouts were today raided and three militant supporters were arrested in upper Chakka area of Bhaderwah tehsil of Doda district, police said, adding that they have been identified as Sajjad Ahmed, Rafiq Ahmed and Raj Mohmmad. Sajjad was working for LeT commander Ashraf Husain, they said. He was tracked down after his conversation on mobile phone with LeT activists was intercepted by the police. LeT militants along with their supporters had sometime back snatched two SIM cards of two jawans of the Forest Protection Force. The jawans had lodged a case in this direction with police. Reports reaching here from Poonch said that a forward post was fired upon from across the border. "There was firing from the Pakistan side across LoC on our forward post Copra in Sabzian sub-sector of Poonch district last night," a senior army officer said on Friday. But there was no loss of life or injury to anyone during the firing, he said, adding that Indian troops guarding the LoC observed total restraint and did not retaliate. Ruling out ceasefire violations along LoC from Pakistani troops, he said militants may have fired at the post. Since January, Pakistani troops have violated the five-year-old ceasefire agreement 32 times and provoked reactions from Indian troops, though the latter refused to retaliate on most occasions. Seven incidents of ceasefire violation in Poonch-Rajouri sector were reported during August and September. The army's Director General of Military Operations had strongly protested to his Pakistani counterpart on several occasions over the ceasefire violations, especially during the Tangdhar firing and the Nowgam LoC breach. Violations of the ceasefire by Pakistani troops have been reported from Jammu, Samba, Rajouri, Tanghdhar and Poonch sector this year during which a large number of militants have tried to infiltrate into India. The army has assessed that the firing occurred whenever militant groups were making attempts to infiltrate into India and ceasefire violations could be a tactic being adopted by Pakistani troops to distract Indian forces. Increased infiltration bids by militants were witnessed in the summer months this year with the state Assembly scheduled to go to polls. Close to 110 infiltration bids were reported in the last eight months as militants felt that the summer months were the best time of the year to augment their depleting strength in the Valley. |
