Mirwaiz Banking Proposal Draws Flak
9/21/2008 12:01:40 AM
ET SPECIAL
JAMMU, Sept 20: Besides his separatists political stand, which holds good in the Kashmir Valley, the Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq commands a sizeable respect for being the chief cleric of Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid but his “Islamic-business” suggestion of making Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd to work on the pattern of Nizam-e-Mustafa has belied his stature and earned sharp criticism.
In his Friday sermon at the Jamia Masjid, the Mirwaiz said that the Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd –which represents entire Jammu and Kashmir and does business in many countries besides being a leading institution of India –should switch over to the Islamic Banking system.
“I don’t have to contradict what Mirwaiz says because that may be true according to Islamic system but Jammu and Kashmir Bank does represent Muslims alone and people have been dealing under the current system for decades”, a teacher of Economics at the Jammu University told EARLY TIMES. The teacher who did not wish to be named further added, “Let Mirwaiz conceive a bank which is exclusively for the Muslims but why change character of Jammu and Kashmir Bank”.
Subhash Gupta, a businessman said, “Mirwaiz has made a deliberate attempt to hurt people who have nothing to with the Islamic banking”. He pointed out, “Jammu and Kashmir Bank is run by we the businessmen and not Mirwaiz or anyone else”.
Meanwhile, Panthers Party leaders Prof Bhim Singh described Mirwaiz’s demand as childish and out of frustration. He said that Kashmiri leadership has been rebuffed by ISI and other anti-Indian agencies through the Pakistan High Commission last week for having failed to involve the Kashmiries in ISI’s old game to sabotage peace in the valley to please their masters with an ulterior motive to destabilize India.
Singh suggested that Mirwaiz should advise Pakistan and other 52 Islamic countries to implement his proposition to put an end to the interest system or benefit receiving procedure from their banking systems and then preach his doctrine to an Indian State which is committed to secularism and for upholding the tenets of democracy and composite culture.
