EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 20: While the general people in Jammu had just started picking up threads where they had left in last week of June that yet another shut down –though for two days - have come knocking the doors.
It is still all a guess work across the town what happened at the Abhinav Theater this morning. The district and divisional administration late this evening said that they had no role, whatsoever; to play in cancellation or disruption of SAYSS’s program supposed to be held at the Abhinav Theater.
Indeed, an official spokesman has said there was a technical fault in the Abhinav Auditorium due to which all bookings had been cancelled till September 28 pending repairs. If this bears truth then why authorities failed to take the SAYSS into confidence to make alternate arrangements. The Government spokesman further claims that the SAYSS office bearers had been informed about the technical fault last evening but still they insisted on going into the Abhinav Theater. This claim has been stoutly denied by the SAYSS Convener Leela Karan Sharma who claimed that he learnt about blockade of gate (and not about the technical fault) as late as 9:30 this morning.
According to the Additional Secretary Academy of Art Culture and Languages, the electric system at Abhinav Theatre had developed a fault leading to cancellation of bookings upto 28th September 2008. Two agencies i.e Sanskar Bharti and Radio Kashmir, Jammu were booked for 20th September 2008. The programme by SAYSS was part of the programme to be conducted by Sanskar Bharti which got cancelled due to technical snag. It was further apprised that Academy had informed the organizers of the function about the problem on the previous night itself on telephone.
Further the Abhinav Theatre management fearing some security problems had formally requested the SSP Jammu to provide them security in response to which Police personals were deployed in the theatre in the morning itself.
Meanwhile, official spokesman clarified here this evening that Deputy Commissioner and SSP Jammu upon hearing about the cancellation of programme had immediately rushed to the spot and requested the organizers to shift the function to some other venue like Ravi Dass Hall, Geeta Bhawan so that the programme could be conducted without any disruption. Refusing to shift to other venue mob resorted to sloganeering and stone pelting leading to mild lathi charge by the Police.
Later, they didn’t agree to hold the function at the alternate venue. The spokesman further stated that administration had no role in the cancellation of the programme.
The Spokesman said that under these circumstances the call for bandh does not appear to be justified. It would only add to the problems of the people especially affect the education of the students. It would also hamper preparation of Navratra festival which is traditionally organized to promote Jammu as a tourist destination.
