JAMMU, Sept 20: Barely 20 days after suspension of 63-day long agitation on the Shri Amranth Shrine land issue, Jammu once again reached the brink of eruption this morning the government, or some of its agencies, played a faux paus with the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti.
The Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti –which had spearheaded the Jammu agitation –had a scheduled a function to honour and offer assistance to the families of all those people who either committed suicide or were killed during the agitation. The function was scheduled to be held at the Canal Road situation Abhinav Theater –managed of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages –at 11:30 this morning.
However, on reaching the venue, the SAYSS leaders, activists and supporters found a huge posse of security forces outside the main gate. The supposed participants of the said function who were invited by cards were not allowed to enter the venue which led to a scuffle between SAYSS supporters and the security forces.
Soon after, violence flared up in Canal Road and Jewel Chowk areas when the state administration barred the Amarnath activists to attend a memorial function. Over a dozen protestors were injured when police resorted to lathi-charge and opened fire in air to disperse Sangarsh Samiti activists when they were forcibly trying to enter the Abhinav Theatre to attend a memorial function. The Rapid Action Force and Central Reserve Police Force contingent were also called by the state administration.
Reacting to this situation, the SAYSS convener Leela Karan in a hurriedly called press conference has given Jammu Bandh call for 48 hours. He said that they have permission to hold a Shardanjali Samaroh function in Abhinav Theatre but when the people reached on the site they became the subject of police astrocities as government in a closed door during midnight revoked the permission. He alleged that there are some elements in the government who do not want to restore normalcy in the state. Sharma said that government is back tracking from their words and maintained though Samiti assured full cooperation after Memorandum of Understanding signed between the government and the Samiti on August 31 but some major demands still are lying unresolved viz quashing of Public Safety Act (PSA) on Saint Dinesh Bharti.
When the media persons phoned the administrators most of them did not pick up the phone while some had switched off their mobiles phone, however during late night press release issued by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art,Culture and Languages stated that there was some fault in the electric system which causing cancellation of bookings.
Speaking to media persons one of the activists of Samiti said, “Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) today organized a Memorial function at Abhinav Theatre to pay tributes to eleven people, who attained martyrdom in two-month long agitation and to compensate their families an amount of Rs 4 lakh each. But before the
Memorial function held , state administration siege the entire route which proceed through Abhinav Theatre to barred the Amarnath activists and member of the Sangarsh Samiti to attend the memorial function” he said.
Hundreds of activists of Sangharsh Samiti and the activists of saffron brigade, assembled outside the venue here today to participate in a function this morning but to their surprise they saw huge police and RAF deployment outside the venue which prevented them from entering into the premises.
"Police resorted to baton charge, fired tear gas shells and opened fire in air to disperse the protestors, who forcibly tried to enter the venue including the Sangharsh Samiti convenor Leela Karan Sharma and his brigade", eye witnesses said.
In police action, at least twelve persons were injured including two saints and some policemen when police opened fire in air and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the agitators,'' an activist of Sangharsh Samiti said.
"The protestors and the security forces pitched brick battles which continued for around one hour as agitators' including women amid chanting of 'Bam-Bam Bhole' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' tried to make their forcible entry to enter the venue", an eye witness said.
