CCI organizes HIV/AIDS awareness programme

JAMMU, Sept 21: The State Councillor Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) State Aids Control Society jointly organized and HIV/AIDS awareness programme for the workers of Cadila Pharmaceutical at Samba here today. Sourabh Bhagat, Deputy Commissioner, wqas the chief guest of the programme, the session was conducted by Dr M A Wani Project Director J&K State AIDS Control Society and Dr Kumkum Sharma HOD blood Bank department, Govt. Medical College. The aim of the session was to sensitise the industrial workers on the dangers of HIV/ AIDS and motivate them to donate them to donate healthy blood. Vice President Bharat Box Ltd Ganjendran Singh and Senior Member CII while welcoming the chief guest and the faculty said that the negative impact of HIV/AIDS on industries can have disastrous consequences on production and economy.
He further said that since industries are the key drivers of state economic growth, it is imperative that the industry workers remain healthy and are fully aware of the dangers of HIV/ AIDS and its preventive measure.
Dr M A Wani said that HIV/AIDS ahs become the most dreaded disease in the world which affects mostly the younger population between 15-24 years.
He further said that the about 16000 new infections occur all over the world per day of which 95% are in developing countries only.
He said in J&K there were 1430 confirmed cases HIV positive people, and 95 caes of AIDS and, 40 cases of death due AIDS. These figures are amongst the lowest in the Indian states. He said that a trained industrial worker if affected by AIDS will lead to decrease in both quantity and quality of out put. Unfortunately this also is accompanied by stigma loss of morale and discrimination. He exhorted the senior management and workers that an HIV/ AIDS effected co worker should not be discriminated upon but should be given a shoulder to lean on be provided medical, which is free.
Dr Kumkum Sharma highlighted the need of voluntary blood donation and said that healty person has approximately 5 litres of blood in the body. If he donates 300 cc then it amounts to only 1/20th part of his blood which is easily regenerated within 24-48 hours.
Deputy Commissioner Bhagar said that it is very rare when under one platform all queries relating to blood donation/Transfusion and AIDS control are clarified by experts on the subject. He thanked CII for organizing just such a platform.
