This fiasco could’ve been avoided
9/21/2008 11:03:45 PM
Whatever happened in Jammu on Saturday morning should best have been avoided. The winter Capital City and many other parts of the region are once against a fresh bout of tension and unrest. Security forces, with their firefighting machines and tools, are again back on the streets. The City of Temples has once more been converted into a Cantonment with thick deployment of troopers. So, who is responsible for Saturday morning fiasco which has threatened the hard earned peace in Jammu? The Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti –which spearheaded two-month long Jammu agitation –had wanted to honour the martyrs of agitation and offer monetary compensation to their families. For the purpose a function was fixed up and the venue was booked. It is all but guess as what motivated the SAYSS to go in for government owned and cultural academy managed Abhinav Auditorium when there was no dearth of alternate accommodations. The Samiti leaders claim that when they reached the venue Saturday morning they found the auditorium complex already seized by Police and a thick security cordon laid around. This, say the Samiti leaders, made them to believe that the government wanted to sabotage the function. The government on the other hand says that booking had to be cancelled due to a technical problem in auditorium and the organization which had actually booked the auditorium (Sanskar Bharti) was informed the previous night. There is no word from the Sanskar Bharti so far but one thing is clear that the mistrust and lack of reasoning in handling sensitive situations has once against crept in. The Government says that the force had to be used to control SAYSS activists who made forced entry into the auditorium complex. Somebody has clearly erred in this whole messy episode which again pushes Jammu to the brink of eruption. A time bound and quick inquiry must be ordered to find out as what happened behind the curtains. Since Saturday morning the Samiti and its supporting organizations including the BJP have been accusing the Governor’s administration of playing into the hands of political bosses to disrupt proceedings of the SAYSS. This is a serious charge which the government should explain. If these allegations have a grain of truth then the government has clearly denied the people of Jammu their basic right to peaceful assembly and their fundamental constitution right to the freedom of expression. There is also another issue which needs to be addressed to maintain peace in the region. The SAYSS believes that the government is not serious and expeditious enough to address the issues contained in August 31 agreement between Dr Sudhir Bloeria panel and the SAYSS members. While it is understandable that the government is making significant headways on the agreement but at the same time it is advisable that the Samiti should be kept informed about the progress. This will maintain the level of trust which is necessary for making peace in Jammu.
