State sport climbing team accorded send-off

JAMMU, Sept 21: Already completed their hat trick of overall championship trophy last year, the star-studded state sport climbing team was given a good send-off today by the J&K Mountaineering Association in a function hosted by the Sprawling Buds School at Chinore, near here.
If won again, it will be for the fourth consecutive time for J&K to win the North Zone Sport Climbing Championship which is going to be held at Nainital in Uttrakhand from September 25 to September 28.
The running trophy of the championship was presented to the team by Sports Officer of J&K State Sports Council, Krishan Sharma, who was special guest in the function.
The 34-member contingent comprising of climbers from all age groups was exposed to the distinguished gathering amidst demonstrations on the newly constructed `wall’ at the school premises by Harjot Kour, Shivani Raj Kaith and Suraj Singh. Both Shivani and Harjot are presently in the India camp and were in Jammu on a break.
While handing over the `running trophy’ to the team, Sports Officer exhorts the climbers to give their best to retain the trophy back. “It gives me immense satisfaction when state excels at the national level. I’m happy to meet those stars who keep on brining laurels to the state despite lack of adequate infrastructure,” said Krishan Sharma while speaking to the climbers.
He complimented the management of Sprawling Buds for constructing an independent sport climbing wall in the school premises thus extending the young boys and girls an opportunity to excel in sports. “I’m confident that other schools would follow the examples set by the Sprawling Buds by way of creating unique sports infrastructure,” he maintained.
General secretary of Tawi Trekkers J&K, Ram Khajuria presented a detailed report of sport climbing activities in the state and also highlighted the achievements of the Association. He also unfolded many untold stories about the game of sport climbing in a professional manner.
Earlier, Principal of the School, Pooja Sharma welcomed the chief guest. Later, vote of thanks was presented by Director of the School, Arti Sharma.
Prominent among others present were president Tawi Trekkers, S S Jamwal; general secretary Mountaineering Association of J&K, Dr C K Khajuria; vice-president, Yogeshwar Kumar; Dr K R Dubey, Subash Bhagat (Corporator).
The team: Men Open: Akshit Mahajan, Sumit Kumar, Puneet Sharma, Gurpreet Singh, Suraj Singh, Amit Khajuria, Vijay Pratap Singh, Ashok Kumar, Ashutosh Sharma and Raman Kumar. Women Open: Bhawana Sharma, Rohini Chib, Sheetal Sharma. Junior Boys: Rajeev Sharma, Anil Kumar, Shivanshu Joshi. Junior Girls: Shivani Raj Kaith, Harjot Kour, Anjali Akhikari, Gurpreet Kour, Radha Kumari. Sub-junior boys: Ashish Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Lovish Choudhary, Sahil Thakarwal, Deepak Choudhary. Sub-junior girls: Princy Choudhary, Shivakshi Joshi, Shivani Thakarwal, Vindya Sharma, Monika Choudhary. Manager: Neha Dutta. Coach: Ram Khajuria. Team Doctor: Dr Shyam Magotra.
