9/21/2008 11:23:59 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 21: A late night hunt has been launched in Chhani Himmat, Greater Kailash, Sainik Colony and adjoining areas after three suspected militants were spotted by an auto rikshaw driver.
Police sources said that an auto rikshaw driver identified as one Rakesh Kumar reported that three youths believed to be militants boarded his rikshaw from Digiana for Chhani Himmat. He said that he took the boarders as routine passengers as they offered him Rs 100 as tariff to reach Chhani Himmat. However, Rakesh said, while on the National Highway bypass along Greater Kailash area he got suspicious when he asked the youths about the specific sector in Chhani Himmat where they wanted to go.
“On asking this they took out pistol and aimed at my temple”, Rakesh was quoted by the Police sources as saying. “I could guess they were militants but had no option but to drive on under the fear of gun”, Rakesh told Police. He further said, just few meters ahead of a Police search post on the NH Bypass near Greater Kailash entry (almost opposite Utsav Banquet) they jumped out of the autorikshaw and ran away towards the marble market. “Perhaps they noticed the cops on naka before I could”, Rakesh was further quoted by the Police sources as saying.
This episode left Rakesh, a resident of Narwal, stunned who instead of approaching the nearby police post called up his family and narrated the incident. Meanwhile, his family members and relative rushed to the place where he had parked his rikshaw. He was then taken to the Narwal Police post where he gave his statement.
Immediately after getting this report a massive hunt has been launched by Police Eastern sub urban localities. No clue could be gathered by the Police till filing this report.
The Police are looking into different aspects. “Prima facie, as per the statement of auto driver, they appear to be militants but we are also looking into their criminal aspect”, a Police officer told EARLY TIMES tonight.
