| Peaceful shutdown in Jammu, Kathua, Samba | | Protests, demonstrations held, several arrested | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 21: Complete bandh was today observed in the neighbouring districts of Kathua and Samba and other smaller townships of these districts in response to a two-day shut down call given by Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti following “mysterious” sabotage of a function where the martyrs of agitation were to be honoured at Abhinav Theater on Saturday morning. In the Winter Capital City of Jammu, which witnessed unprecedented raging protests throughout the months of July and August, the effect of shut down call was not as effective as expected. Shut will continue for Monday as Samiti had asked for two-day bandh as a mark of protest and warning. Overall situation remained peaceful in Jammu barring sporadic incidents of street clashes with police at various places. Public transport was exempted from the strike but due to Sunday holiday the majority of streets wore a deserted look. Small groups of people including women came out on the streets and shouted anti Governor slogans demanding action against the police officers responsible for the police action at Abhinav theatre. The activists of the sangarsh samiti burnt effigies of the Governor and state government and shouted anti governor slogans at several places. In Gangayal area police used mild force to disperse the gathering of people. The jammu bandh call was given by the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) to protest against police highhandedness on Saturday. The state authorities had prevented leaders of the sangarsh samiti from entering the premises of the Abhinav theatre to attend homage ceremony organised in the memory of martyrs of those killed during two month long agitation. Convenor of the sangarsh samiti Advocate Leela Karan Sharma on saturday demanded immediate implementation of the agreement signed between the State Government panel and the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board last month. According to the agreement, the shrine board will continue to discharge its duties and supervise arrangements of the pilgrimage with the State Government's support. It was also agreed upon that the land at Baltal and Domail would be set aside exclusively for the pilgrimage and no money will be charged for using the forestland.Meanwhile, addressing a press conference here today Mahant Rameshwar Das alleged police opened fire onhis vehicle to execute their plot of eliminating him with an aim to trigger more unrest in Jammu. Peaceful bandh was also observed in Kathua, Udhampur,Samba, Bisnah,Akhnoor and other areas of the Jammu region. |
