| Extension in IT deadline unlikely | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 22: The traders in Jammu and Kashmir, despite their repeated pleas on genuine account, are unlikely to get extension in deadline for filing the Income Tax returns which they are required to do before September 30. Having lost more than two months to the agitation, the traders had appealed for extension in deadline. However, the Union Ministry of Finance is reported to have declined the request when matter was taken up with Finance Minister P Chidambram by Pradesh Congress Committee chief and Union Water Resources Minister Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz. Soz today took up the matter with the Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, urging him that the tax payers in the J&K State may be allowed to file their returns by Nov, 30, 2008 as the trading community and others had lost considerable time during the recent agitation in Kashmir Valley and Jammu, with the result that they had not updated the records. The Finance Minister informed Prof. Soz that he would extend the date for filing returns till end of September, which Prof. Soz did not find acceptable. Prof. Soz has argued that since considerable time was lost to the trading community, it would be a genuine concession if the last date for filling income tax returns was extended to October 31st at least. Needless to mention, many traders and citizens had met Prof. Soz and requested him (Soz) to seek the said concession from the Finance Minister. |
