EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 23: Notwithstanding the fast measures to have better relations on both sides of divide, all is not going well along the Line of Control.
Two points on the Line of Control are being readied up for trade and enhanced people-to-people contacts, but there dozens more points where militants stationed on the other side are making desperate attempts to sneak in and disturb peace. The latest encounter in Poonch sector is a case in point where Army killed four infiltrators but the Pakistan counterparts refused to take charge in the flag meeting.
Washing its hands off abetment to infiltration by providing fire cover, the Pakistan Army is instead accusing the Indian counterparts of firing on other side. The Pakistan Army accused India of killing a girl on its side of the border after Indian troops fired at its troops at the Line of Control in Poonch sector.
Pakistan Army spokesman Major Murad Khan said Indian troops fired across the de facto border in Rawalakot sector, and Pakistani troops returned the fire. Strongly protesting the Indian firing at the LoC, Islamabad has demanded a flag meeting. However, India's Brigadier Gopala Krishnan Murali, terming the charge as "baseless," said that militants from Pakistan infiltrated into India and triggered a gun-battle that left several of the insurgents dead.
Meanwhile, in a latest case, An army jawan was critically injured today in cross firing between Indian and Pakistan troops in Krishna Ghati area of Poonch district.
"A Naib Subedar of 28 Gorkha Rifles sustained bullet injury on his eye and was reportedly got seriously wounded during exchange of firing in bordering Krishna Ghati area late last evening," sources said.
However, the bullets were fired after every short interval from Khatoon and Begum Posts in Pakistan on forward Victor Post on this side of the border.
The critically injured jawan was immediately shifted to the Military Hospital in Rajouri, they said. Meanwhile, yesterday in Sabzian sub sector of Poonch district, two militants and an army jawan were also killed in cross firing.
''An army jawan identified as Naik Tape Vajo of 1 Assam Regiment was killed in cross firing when the Pakistan troops opened fire on Kamya Post on this side of the border,'' sources said adding that with the killing of two more militants yesterday, four infiltrators out of a group, who sneaked into the Indian Territory on Sunday have been gunned down.
''Earlier two militants and an army jawan were killed on Sunday during day-long gun battle between the army and the Pakistan troops, when reportedly 12 infiltrators sneaked into the Indian Territory,'' sources added.
''Two militants were gunned down when they were trapped by the army after successfully entering the Indian side while one jawan identified as Sepoy Cheeba of 1 Assam Regiment also killed,'' sources asserted and said the day-long gun battle ended at around 1630 hrs.
''Two AK 47 rifles, two AK 56 rifles, 200 rounds of ammunition, 16 grenades and food packets have been recovered from the Sabzian Sector while the search operation in Kamya and Kailash Posts has been intensified in the wake of infiltration attempt by the armed militants,'' sources maintained.
Meanwhile, elsewhere along Line of Control, an army jawan allegedly committed suicide by hanging at a forward post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir today, Defence sources said.
Raj Kumar of 54 Field Artillery Regiment, belonging to Rajasthan, hanged himself in forward Kalsa post during duty hours in Nowshera belt. A court of inquiry has been ordered into the incident, sources said. Though his colleagues shifted him to a hospital, he was declared brought dead.
