| Under-22 national cricket tournament in trouble? | | |
Srinagar, Sep 11 With less than a month remaining for under-22 national cricket championship to start, Jammu and Kashmir was yet to announce its probables or put in place the infrastructure required for hosting the tournament.
Sources in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) told UNI that the state was yet to select its probables for coaching and conditioning as the tournament was scheduled to begin in October.
They said even the practice pitches were not ready as yet and it would take some time to put in place the required infrastructure.
The sources said the JKCA was going through the worst period ever since its inception. ''The groupism and litigation has marred the carrer prospects of several budding cricketers,'' they added.
The association elections were held in April this year and a new body of office bearers, headed by former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, was elected.
''But, it seems that there are some disgruntled elements, claiming to enjoy the patronage of the President (Dr Abdullah), who have made the functioning of JKCA almost impossible. The working committee took a serious note of anti-association activities of some members and an inefficient secretary and placed them under suspension,'' the sources said.
Despite the Jammu and Kashmir High Court orders, these elements continue to enjoy the JKCA President's support, the sources said.
They said the JKCA President had made commitments to the public that the association will construct a stadium with all amenities in the vicinity of Srinagar and also at Jammu.
''But it seems that the vested interests will not allow him and his office bearers to move forward. The national tournaments are about to begin, but the President has not taken any steps to put an end to these uncertainties in the association,'' the sources said.
They said it was high time that the President acted as otherwise the cricketers would be forced to launch an agitation and force the state government to take over the control of the association.
''The bank operations have been stopped by the High Court because the disgruntled elements are out to reduce the status of the elected chairman and treasurer and want only the suspended secretary to carry on the job illegally. Dr Abdullah should take control of the situation and in an impartial way put halt to the groupism in the association,'' the sources said.
