Media is society’s watchdog: Jandial

JAMMU, Sept 25: Cautioning the media against taking sides and misrepresenting facts while reporting in challenging situations, K. B. Jandial, Secretary to Government, Information and Public Relations, today strongly urged the media persons to play a constructive and positive role in nation building and maintaining peace and harmony in any society.
Jandial, who was speaking at an interactive session organized by the Centre for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension (CACE&E), University of Jammu on "Social Responsibility Of Media in Challenging Situations" in the CACE&E Seminar hall today said that media's role is to inform the people because information is power and the media persons have to ensure that they don't violate the effort and solidarity of the state.
"Media is a watchdog of the society and it has to safeguard the rights of the people. It has to see that the basic value system is not compromised. Media has also to remain faithful to the facts," said Mr. Jandial who has contributed immensely to official media in Jammu and Kashmir and is a well known name not only in J&K but at national and International levels also.
Laying emphasis on peace, harmony through media, he said nothing is important than these two things. He said main emphasis of media should to be to build a committed and strong nation and not a society which is full of divisions. And they should create an atmosphere where threats are minimized..
Dr. Arun Joshi, Bureau Chief, Hindustan Times, J&K who is a well known journalist with over 20 years of experience in print media, while speaking on the theme, said that times have really changed with regard to media both in Jammu and Kashmir and countrywide. Referring to the role of media role in the recent Amarnath land agitation, Dr. Joshi said it was a political issue in which two political parties wanted to kill each other but instead they killed 60 people of Jammu and Kashmir and the losses amounted to Rs 20,000 crore.
Pradeep Dutta, Bureau Chief, Times Now TV, Jammu and Zaffar Iqbal, Bureau Chief, NDTV, Jammu spoke in detail about the social responsibility of media in challenging times. Both Dutta and Iqbal, who are alumni of Kashmir University having done their Masters in Mass Communication from there, shared their experiences of working in both print and electronic media.
Deepak Budki, Chief Post Master General, J&K postal circle also spoke at the occasion. Earlier, Professor Poonam Dhawan, Director, Centre for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension (CACE&E) welcomed the guests and key speakers while Dr Kavita Suri, Assistant Director, Centre for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension (CACE&E) who initiated and coordinated the interactive session, conducted the program.
