| Azad takes alternate route to Jammu | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 26: Conspicuous by his absence from the all-important meeting of Pradesh Congress Committee, the former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is all set to return to the public scene in Jammu but through a different route. First time after fall of his government in most unpleasant circumstances and the eruption of public fury in Jammu on Amarnath land row, the former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will be showing up at a public function in town on Sunday. Interestingly, instead of taking the party route, Azad will be arriving at the public scene via a social-religious organization. Guru Ravidas Sabha is holding a public honour for Azad here on Sunday, sources said. Ten days after fall of his government on July 7, Azad had addressed a public meeting in Akhnoor along with PCC Chief and Union Minister Saif-ud-Din Soz since then he has been keeping away from the public. A couple of weeks back, Azad was again in Jammu but he did not address a public meeting organized by former Gandhi Nagar MLA Raman Bhalla which was addressed by Soz. There was a reflection of unease within the state unit of Congress and party’s “Kashmir think tanks” in New Delhi when Azad was found absent in the PCC meet here on Thursday and earlier last week in Srinagar –both attended by Soz and General Secretary Prithvi Raj Chavan, who is also a Union Minister of State. When asked, a party leader said that Azad was away in Madhya Pradesh in connection with party affairs. “The party high command had wanted Azad in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday which is why he could not attend Jammu meeting”, a Congress leader told EARLY TIMES. Another party leader, however, said that the meeting was supposed to be held in absence of Azad so that the local leaders speak their heart out if they had anything otherwise to hide. Two days after the PCC meeting Azad will in Jammu on Sunday to attend a function of Guru Ravidas Sabha being organized in his honour. “He has offered the Sabha Rs 30 lakhs as Chief Minister for construction of a hall and a community honour was due to him which we will be according on Sunday”, said RK Kalsotra, an active leader of the Sabha. More than 8,000 people are expected to attend the function being held in Krishna Nagar at 10 AM on Sunday. The Guru Ravidas Sabha has 102 units in Jammu region and public has been extensively mobilized for Azad’s function. Their religious Guru Sri Sri 108 Swami Gurdeep Girji Maharaj will also attend the function, besides former Minister BR Kundal. |
