| WILL JUNIOR ‘SHER’ JOIN HANDS WITH JUNIOR ‘BAKRA’ ? | | | Srinagar, September 11 : Will history get repeated in Jammu and Kashmir with the forging of double Umar alliance on the pattern the state witnessed in 1983 when Dr Farooq Abdullah and Moulvi Farooq joined hands thereby burying traditional conflict between ” bakras” ( Sheep goat) and “Sher” (lion) ? For National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, the possibility of such an alliance is not bleak. He foresees the alliance to materialize anytime in future. Dr Abdullah is not averse to promoting double Umar alliance in Jammu and Kashmir on the pattern he had forged with late Molvi Farooq, chairman of the Awami Action Committee,in 1983. At that stage it was called double Farooq alliance when the Kashmir Mirwaiz and Dr Farooq shook hands at a public rally in the summer capital. In a recent interview Dr Farooq Abdullah has said that the possibility of double Umar alliance, the partnership between his son, Omar Abdullah, and chairman All Party Hurriyat Conference, Molvi Umar Farooq, in the near future "cannot be ruled out." In reply to a question Dr Farooq has said that the "slogan of Azadi for Kashmir is a fraud", adding that both Pakistan and Hurriyat leaders had, by now, realised that "Azadi cannot be achieved. "He claimed that as a result of this realisation Islamabad had agreed to have a dialogue with Delhi and also suggested to the Hurriyat leaders to hold talks with the Government of India. Dr Farooq said that "the claim of many politicians and writers that militancy in Jammu and kashmir was the result of rigging in the Assembly election in 1987 was baseless and lacked credibility. "He said Pakistan had already conceived the operation ‘Topac’ and those who attribute rigging in the election to the rise of militancy were wrong. However, while speaking at a function in Jammu on Sunday Dr Abdullah predicted fall of the coalition Government in the state because of infighting in the PDP. He said he would welcome a Congress-National Conference coalition and even went to the extent of expressing his desire of working with Mr Mangat Ram Sharma,a senior most Congress leader and a cabinet minister. This indicates that Dr Abdullah had not closed the party's doors for an alliance with the Congress. |
