| BGSB University gets famed lead garden title | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 27: Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri, has added one more feather to its cap with the recognition conferred on it as the ‘lead garden’ for the northwest Phytogeographic region. BGSB University is the only university in the country to hold this distinction and also holds distinction as one of the eight regional resource centres, identified by DBT, Government of India, through out the country. Lead Gardens, such as those at Kew (UK), Missouri (USA) and Singapore function as important resource centres for biodiversity conservation and education vis-à-vis the obligations under the CBD and WTO regime. The lead garden of the centre of biodiversity studies envisages undertaking research related to biodiversity, inventorization and conservation. Under the extension programme, the centre is running bio resource- based training programme for rural women. The project funded by CBT to the tune of Rs.86 lakhs aims at helping women to learn skills and utilize them to augment rural economy. To enable the centre to effectively discharge its role as ‘Lead Garden’ and to provide leadership support to satellite botanic gardens in North India, it is being strengthened with funds to the tune of a crore of rupees for technical manpower and facilities for advanced research. |
