2 killed, 26 injured in Mehrauli blast
9/28/2008 12:08:16 AM
AGENCY
NEW DELHI, Sept 27: Two persons were killed and 26 others injured when a low intensity bomb blast rocked a flower market in South Delhi’s Mehrauli area on Saturday afternoon. Confirming death of a child, police said that the explosion took place outside an electronics shop, near Andheriya More.
According to eyewitnesses, two men on a motorcycle had dropped a tiffin box at the market, known as Phoolwalon ki Sairwala Market, near Aulia Masjid. When the boy picked up the tiffin box, a loud explosion took place, killing him and injuring many people. The explosion shattered the window panes of several adjacent shops in the market located close to the historic Qutab Minar, which was bustling with shoppers. The market has since been evacuated.
The blast, which caused a crater, left a gory scene where blood was splattered on the road along with broken glass panes and furniture.
The market was closed and the blast site cordoned off soon after the blast. Police said that the blast occurred at around 2:15 pm.
Delhi Police personnel, bomb disposal squad and a team of National Security Guard rushed to the spot and conducted combing operations searches. Fire engines were also sent to the site. An abandoned container was also reported to be found in the area.
Meanwhile, officials said Ammonium Nitrate was used in the bomb accompanied with one-and-a-half inch nails, which acted as shrapnels leading to injuries.
The packing of explosive was very loose thus making it a low-intensity explosion.
The same explosive material was used in the five serial blasts that shook the national capital on September 13, leaving 24 people dead and many others injured.
The national capital has been put on high alert following the blast. Police have also asked people to stay away from crowded markets of the city.
Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal and Joint Police Commissioner (Special Cell) Karnail Singh who visited the site said that the police has been put on high alert and they would soon come up with some concrete information about the culprits.
