| Unprecedented security cover for Advani`s Shillong visit | | | AGENCY SHILLONG, Sept 28: A massive security cover has been put in place in and around the Meghalaya capital in view of BJP leader L K Advani's visit to the state on Monday even as police continued to interrogate Mominul Haque who had send an email in the name of Indian Mujahhidin threatening to eliminate Advani during his Shillong visit. "We have taken foolproof security measures to thwart any untoward incidents during Advani's visit to the city. A detachment of NSG has arrived in the city and they along with the state police were keeping strict surveillance in the areas that Advani's motorcade would travel and places he is schedule to visit," Director General of Police B K Dey Sawian said. The DGP said security measures were being evaluated on an hour-to-hour basis. Advani is scheduled to address a public rally in Shillong as part of his 'Sankalpa Yatra', besides attending a meeting of religious leaders and meeting the Chief Minister, state Planning Board Chairman PA Sangma and other ministers. He will also lay the foundation stone of the state BJP office. When asked whether there was any threat to the leader, the DGP said, "There is always an impending threat on the leader of Opposition. But we are ready for any eventuality." The lone BJP MLA A L Hek, who is also the state PHED minister told PTI, "The BJP is satisfied with the security arrangements. We are sure the visit would pass off peacefully." He hoped the visit would bring a wave in the state in favour of the party. Meanwhile, the DGP said Mominul was being interrogated by a special team headed by a senior officer. Mominul was arrested on Thursday for sending an email to local newspapers here threatening to eliminate Advani during his Shillong visit. The email was sent in the name of Northeast field commander of Indian Mujahhidin Abu Hussain Badr. Stating that the case was still under investigation, Sawian said, "we feel we will be able to get something out of the case very soon. We have to go into the Psyche of the person to find out whether he had any linkages beyond himself." The accused, a 30-year old law student, has reportedly travelled to countries like Emirates, Bahrain and Bangladesh, several times besides maintaining many foreign contacts. Police have seized his passport and were looking into his email and phone contacts. |
