| Make your choices clean | | | | In all probability the Election Commission of India is likely to announce the schedule for polls to Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly anytime by next week or within first half of the month of October. An understanding is reported to have been arrived between all concerned quarters in New Delhi that the democratically elected government should take charge of state by middle of December so that the new dispensations starts working on the next year’s annual financial budget. Two main political parties, the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party, had though at all public occasions opposed the elections being held at this stage but behind the curtains these parties are actively engaged in the poll campaign. Not sure of their opinion having the last laugh, the PDP and Congress did not waste even a single day and even they reached to the selection of candidates. There is a lot of unrest among the cadres and their supporters as almost all parties are adopting the same old method of choosing candidates. This exercise is also underway in Congress and BJP though at preliminary level. In case of these national parties the final selection is always made by the central high commands. However, it needs to be seen as to how democratic the selection of candidates is made by all parties. The State has a number of emerging parties and the two parties the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party are found to be lacking in observing internal democracy. If this is not so then why is their dissenting voice over selection of candidates? However, with parties it is generally seen that the workers remain a discontented lot. Even so these days the workers of both the Peoples Democratic Party and National Conference are not satisfied with the selection of candidates. One of the reasons is said to be keeping in abeyance the norms for selection of candidates. A candidate who has good relations with high and mighty of the party finds favour in his selection. And who is able to shed more money too. Generally family members of leaders get precedence. All this ultimately tells upon the democratic institutions. Hence it is time, at least the main political parties take note of this malaise and establish healthy practices in selection of candidates for the august houses. After all workers in the party too have their ambitions which needs to be looked into. They need to be complimented for their good deeds to the party. Of course all cannot be given tickets for contesting in elections. Hence as far as possible the party high command should take note of the views of the workers too and if discontent is simmering then necessary measures taken to stem the same in time lest it causes untold damage to the party at an important time of state and parliamentary election. Parties should, in fact, get feedback from the public to make choices of the candides. |
