Jammu Calling!!
9/28/2008 11:11:33 PM
Dr Rakesh Sharma

If I were to become a leader I would bring about the change? Sounds more like a typical netaji’s talk (if not a balderdash!), But perhaps that’s what most of us if not all, are thinking most of the times. What needs to be discerned here is that one needs not to be a netaji to bring about a change and may be that’s the reason why the change that’s required is never brought about, as we as a society all so comfortably leave it to the netaji’s prerogative to bring about that change, something that is the last thing on their mind and more so because its crystal clear to them beyond any ambiguity that in our society its mandatory to be a netaji to have a say or at least that’s the message that has been sent to them in the past(may be the Jammu movement changed a little bit of that!).
We also as a society have deep within lost to the hopelessness of the system and are more or less defeated in our outlook as far as expecting things from the leaders and the system goes. Who is the leader seems to be more of a formality as no matter who it is, the way the things are, is the way the things were and perhaps would be also. It’s just the faces or names that change.
We must ourselves understand here that the greed( that we so gladly label our leaders with), may be a shade of that is reflected in each one of us as well, otherwise its really hard to reason as to why the society as a whole never seems to have taken a stand in the past. Perhaps the only reason that one could fathom ,is that big ‘Me’ inside each of us, which says all the time as to what I will get out of it and none of us ever seems to care as to what the society as a whole might get out of it. It is this craving for vested interests that may be, has always come in the way of our society actually standing up for a cause and hence there seems to be this precondition that ,if any one of us is to play a role ,it has to be that of a leader. Perhaps if you were to ask me, I would rather say that the kind of brand that the leaders of today have built, may be identifying if not idolising them might fall a little short of any sense of pride.
Another thing that needs to be comprehended is the reason as to why Jammu as a society does not have that grand, an identity, that it deserves (I would only be happy if that was not true!).Is it that we don’t have faces here or we lack intellect or that people from our region have not made it that far? Well most of it is so untrue but then in spite of all that there is still something that stops us from being where we ought to be (right at the top!).What could that be? Well this needs to be analysed if not understood. Could it be that for some reason we don’t take pride in identifying ourselves with the place we belong, relating ourselves to our roots, the place that belongs to us. Trust me there has to be a cause. Or is it that we always have been expecting others to come to our rescue, and believe me nowhere in the whole world has this ever happened that some one else gives you your identity (you have to strife for it!) lest it shall never happen. It is we the people who have stakes as a society, who have emotions involved, who have to run the gauntlet, and most importantly we have to stop expecting to get any recognition for that( for it shall follow naturally) and surely not to expect any leadership tag for that!!
Could there be something more than the leadership issue? If one digs into our society a little, one reason that may erupt is the lack of mutual trust and support and the willingness to see one of us (and not just myself) at the top, it is this problem in not taking pride in seeing a Jammuite do good (even if that jammuite is not me!) that may be makes our society lag a little.
Time has come finally to make ourselves understand that if we don’t do it right now, may be history is never ever going to give us a second chance. The priceless treasure of one’s identity and motherland only a displaced person can understand! Only a displaced person will conjecture, what it means when you say that you belong to a place where you can’t stay anymore, even if you could afford the best place on earth. So it is for us to understand that parents and the place that we belong to, no matter how ordinary it might be for others, but for us that’s something which cannot have a price and that’s some thing that no one else can give us, our identity!
We might have umpteen differences amongst ourselves, but at least we have one thing that binds us (Jammu), and we must take pride in it, because there are so many things in the world that divide us but rarely we come across things that hold us together and identity is one sure thing that does that, so each one of us must ensure that we do our bit to preserve and uphold with utmost propriety our Jammu identity in spite of our differences.
