EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 28: Remaining a hub of agitation for two months with Congress as focal point of anger, Krishna Nagar locality in the Winter Capital City today gave way to the party’s first major political activity after the prolonged turmoil which saw Congress leaders running for the cover.
The occasion was Guru Ravidas Sabha’s honour ceremony for the former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Though it was a function of social and religious nature, but its political significance far outweighed any other meaning.
Azad, who arrived in town Saturday, today addressed a sizeable gathering organized by the Guru Ravidas Sabha. This was the first public meeting of the former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in Jammu after fall of his government on July 7.
However, the first beginning after tumultuous political turmoil was seen rather halfway as most of the senior party leaders despite being in the town were conspicuous by their absence at the function addressed by Azad. Prominent among those who accompanied Azad were Mangat Ram Sharma, Girdhari Lal, GM Saroori, Swarn Lata and BR Kundal. However, notable among those who were not seen there were Madan Lal Sharma, Raman Bhalla, Mula Ram. Gulchain Singh Charak and Yogesh Sawhney.
In his speech, the former Chief Minister mainly concentrated on his development initiatives. Expressing satisfaction in developments of all the three regions during his regime, Azad said Congress has steered the state towards multi-dimensional development in the fields of education, health, tourism and other sectors.
However, Mr. Azad regretted that the two and half-year time was not quite enough to bring drastic developmental change, which was being ignored for the last six-decades.
‘’Cong coalition in an endeavour to assuage the grievances of Jammu region has set Finance Commission to remove the economic disparity among three regions of state which was allotted statuary status to submit its reports,’’ Mr Azad said while addressing a gathering at a function organised during foundation laying ceremony here.
Mr Azad asserted that his government has amended reservation rules and had hiked the reservation quota in the promotion in government sector by 100 per cent for SC/ST community.
‘’Besides many other achievements, Cong coalition has also crafted new district by the implementation of Wazir Commission,’’ the former Chief Minister added.
Mr Azad while commenting upon the constitution of Delimitation Commission said, ‘’the Bill for enhancing the assembly seats by 25 per cent by constituting delimitation commission was tabled during his regime in 2006 but unfortunately the consensus was not built within the other parties in the House for which I have to pull out the Bill.’’
