Governor visits Chakan-da-Bagh terminal

POONCH, Sept 28: Getting ready for the historic Cross LoC trade, Chakkan-da-Bagh, the remote forward area in Poonch district, this morning hummed with activity, as Governor N N Vohra, inspected work on the Trade Facilitation Centre which is coming up on war-footing basis.
Vohra reviewed the Project with the senior officers and stressed the need for completing the first phase of the Centre immediately, as the cargo will move on this border route from October 21.
The Governor inspected the arrangements being made to establish the Facilitation Centre on 70 kanals of land, 2.5 kilometers ahead of the Zero Point. This facility is being established at a cost of Rs. 19 crore. The Centre will have Cargo Examination Hall, Warehouse, Truck Terminal, Custom Clearance Hall etc. The work, already begun, will be done on a double shift basis. The movement of trucks will take place every Tuesday and Wednesday between 9 am to 4 pm.
The Governor announced an additionality of about Rs. 2 crore for electrification, water supply, road maintenance and construction of flood channels in the area.
Vohra discussed the details of the Centre with the engineers and high ranking security officials. He also went up to the Zero Point on the LoC and took stock of the condition of the road leading to Rawlakote. He gave on-the-spot instructions for up-gradation and maintenance of this vital link between Jammu and Kashmir and Pak-occupied-Kashmir.
Interacting with the people at Poonch, the Governor described the event as a major milestone after the successful operation of the bus service on Uri-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakote Roads. He said that this is yet another Confidence Building Measure (CBM) between India and Pakistan, which will pave the way for peace and prosperity in the region and help in creating deeper understandings between the two countries. He recalled the benefits of the bus service and said that this has enabled the divided families of the region to be re-united.
Vohra urged the people to maintain peace and strong communal harmony, emphasizing that this was vital for progress and prosperity in the border areas like Poonch. He said that his Administration was determined to ensure the equitable development of all the three regions of the State with thrust on the border and rural areas.
The Governor listed various measures taken for the development of the border areas and said that possibilities would be explored to exploit the tourism potential of the Poonch district in a big way. Promotion of tourism, he added, would give economic fillip to the border areas like Poonch and create ample opportunities of employment.
Vohra was accompanied by his Principal Secretary, Mr. B B Vyas, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Mr. Sudhanshu Pandey, Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Mr. K Rajendra and Commissioner/Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Dr. Pawan Kotwal. The Chief Engineers of Irrigation, PWD, Power and Public Health Engineering besides the DIG, Mr. Kamal Saini and Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Mr. Mohammed Afzal were present on the occasion.
