We helped resolve Amarnath land row: Omar
9/29/2008 11:43:36 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 29: After keeping away from the Winter Capital City when his name was the hate symbol of agitation and several hundreds of his effigies were sent up in smoke, the National Conference president Omar Abdullah today arrived to a tumultuous welcome to the town.
The road from airport to the Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan was painted red with National Conference flags as Omar was taken into an enthusiastic procession to the party headquarters where he addressed the workers. This was in sharp contrast to August 2 situation when his father and party patron Dr Farooq Abdullah remained holes up inside airport for four years as agitated people of Jammu did not allow him to move out.
While addressing a convention of party workers, Omar Abdullah said that his party was instrumental in getting the Amarnath land row resolved. “We played a lead role in helping the Government of India to resolve Amarnath land controversy to bring normalcy in the region”, said Omar.
He hit out at the Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party for what he said mishandling of the Amarnath issue. Omar accused them of playing vote bank politics and dividing the state on the basis of religion, region without concentrating their energies towards resolving the issue which brought the state on the brink of division.
Lashing out at the Congress party for playing spoilsport over the issue of Amarnath land transfer, Omar Abdullah said the trouble started with the congress party. "They lit fire in Jammu and it engulfed Kashmir valley. When it was time to douse the flames they ran away from the state, in an oblique reference to Ghulam Nabi Azad.
"You name one Congress leader who came out and supported the idea of united Jammu and Kashmir, Omar charged. He did not spare PDP leadership and came down heavily on them, but without naming anyone from the party. "Political leaders who claim they are tallest leaders in Kashmir played narrow minded politics. They made every attempt to ignite the fire and supported the idea of dividing the state in to different regions".
The NC leader also blamed Sangarsh Samiti for its unwarranted agitation adding that due to the economic blockade, people of Kashmir have now started thinking the other way. He pointed out that even during the peak period of militancy there was no such blockade but regretted that this time the Jammuties showed their real face forcing Kashmiri traders to opt for other means of trade. He said that his Parliament speech on land row was misquoted and made it clear that the party had threadbare discussions on the issue.
Referring to ‘Challo Muzaffarbad’ call Omar said those advocated for it had in fact no agenda and were befooling the people on emotional issues.
He said the gap between the two regions is deep and it is not easy to bridge this gap in days. It will take some time before people across both the regions will come together.
He said if voted to power National Conference government would set up a commission headed by the Supreme Court judge to investigate charges of indiscrimination leveled by people of both the regions against each other. He also blamed Congress –PDP government for rampant corruption in the state and said that NC is the only party which can keep the secular fabric of the state intact and is committed to unite all the three regions.
