| Vohra recalls 1969 Kashmir stay | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Sept 30: Observing that the tourism sector holds an enormous promise for economic transformation of Jammu and Kashmir, Governor N N Vohra has expressed the hope that with gradual easing of restrictions more virgin tourist destinations would be thrown open for domestic and foreign tourists. Addressing a function, after inaugurating the Kongposh Hotel JKTDC here today, the Governor described as a misnomer the general perception about tourism being restricted only to the summer months in the State and said that the winter period can be equally inviting for adventure tourists and Winter Sports on the magnificent slopes of Gulmarg and many parts of Ladakh region. Vohra elaborated on the impact of tourism on the State's economy and observed that in the Indian context, one tourist brings cheer to nine persons involved with the tourism trade. Recalling his two weeks stay in TRC, Srinagar way back in 1959Vohra said that it was truly a wonderful experience. He complimented the JKTDC for constructing Kongposh hotel at TRC and hoped that it would be an ideal facility for the tourists and for those organizing conferences. He asked the JKTDC to formulate a proposal for the approach road to the hotel from the main road. Secretary, Tourism Nayeem Akhter and the Managing Director JKTDC, Abdul Aziz Wani, while welcoming the Governor, briefed about the facilities being created for the tourists in the State. The Governor was informed that the hotel has been completed at a cost of Rs. 4 crore through internal resources of the JKTDC. Under Phase-II, the hotel will have a central heating system and elevators. Advisor to Governor H.H. Tyabji, Director General of Police, CID, Dr. Ashok Bhan, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Mehraj Ahmad Kokroo, Director Tourism, Kashmir, Farooq Ahmed, and senior officers, besides a large number of people engaged in tourism trade were present on the occasion. |
