New Players On Move

Peoples Conference and Apni Party are trying to occupy the political space in Kashmir that has been created by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hitting a dead end.
Most of the PDP leaders have deserted the party and have joined other political formations. Apni Party led by former minister, Altaf Bukhari, has accommodated many PDP leaders, while the Peoples Conference led by Sajad Lone after pulling out from Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has become more vibrant and active.
The party led by Sajad Lone is trying to turn North Kashmir into its bastion by roping in more and more leaders from Baramulla, Kupwara and other important districts in the northern side.
The PC faces stiff competition from the Apni Party that has already made inroads in central and south Kashmir. It seems that both these parties together have already filled up the void. And these parties are already giving tough competition to the National Conference. The developments that have taken place in the recent past have made the NC soften its stand. The party has realized that it can't show teeth to New Delhi and if it does so it can end up on a losing side.
Kashmir centric parties are finding it hard to put their acts together as the traditional parties can no longer sell old wine in new bottles. The NC and PDP have been brought at par with the other political parties.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti is in a big mess as most of her close lieutenants have called it quits and have chosen greener pastures.
The recent charge sheet filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) about the PDP being linked to the terror funding case has left Mehbooba high and dry. She has no idea about how to respond to the charges that have been filed against her party. She has been even denied clearance for her passport. Mehbooba has been left alone as no one wants to carry the baggage she is carrying.
In the past one and a half years it has become clear to Kashmir centric politicians that they can no longer cross the line and if they want to exist they will have to follow the nationalist line. They selling illusions and raising hollow slogans won't help their cause. The parties that are trying to fill in the space are telling people that they can only fight for restoration of statehood and reversing the clock is impossible.
