9/11/2006 11:24:54 PM

JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 11 - Instructing Chief Engineers of PHE and Power to detail him every morning on the energy and water supply scenario, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Mr. Pramod Jain today said that people having grievances against the supply of water and electricity could now also register their complaints either in personam or on telephone numbers at Divisional Commissioner's office.
Inviting people to send in their complaints during working hours i.e from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on telephone numbers 2544045, 2544665, 2566179, 2566189, 248052 and 2560756, Mr. Jain assured swift action in redressal of genuine gripes.
Enquiring about the water and energy positions in Jammu province, the Divisional Commissioner held detail deliberations with Chief Engineer PHE Mr. V.K. Goswami, Chief Engineer Power (M&RE) Mr. D.S. Pawar and Joint Director Information Mr. S.K. Sharma.
On the water supply requirements and its shortfall, Chief Engineer PHE apprised the Divisional Commissioner that the collapse of Sitlee Filtration Plant has severely affected the water supply to old Jammu city and Janipur, New Plots, Bakshi Nagar, Roop nagar, Chinore, etc. He said that the department requires 88 lakh gallons of water per day to cater to the water needs of the people that too on alternate days.
Mr. Goswami said that presently Sitlee is delivering 70 lakh gallons of water daily and to bridge the shortfall 40 tankers are already pressed into service in these water deficient areas. He said that in old Jammu City the supply in Mohallas and streets is being fed from two fire tenders. He said that two more fire waters are also being specially deployed for catering to the water needs of the people of old City. "Now people need not carry buckets, lest the large pipes of water cannons would directly make water available at people's doorsteps even in steep and narrow lanes of old City', he added.
The Chief Engineer PHE said that on the instructions of Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad 10 bore-wells are also being burrowed in various areas of the winter capital. He said while two bore wells at Shakti Nagar area have already been completed thereby yielding nearly 2 lakh gallons of water per day, work on bore-well excavation at M.A. Stadium is in progress and is expected to be completed in another four to five days.
Mr. Goswami assured that the water supply situation and shortfall would improve tremendously by fortnight. He, however, sought cooperation of the people in overcoming the water shortfall. Advising people to use water judiciously besides properly storing it to meet shortfall and scarcity.
Briefing about the energy situation, Chief Engineer M&RE Mr. D.S. Pawar said that faults occurring at Gladni and Salal stations forced the department to make unscheduled cuts. He said that the 48 hour long disruption at Gladni on the intervening night of September 8 and 9 took 8 long hours for the engineers to rectify the current transformer fault. He said that to upgrade Gladni supply system, the power department on September 9 resorted to a 4 hour long unscheduled cut from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., but a major sang at Salal station on the same day at about 10 a.m. totally disrupted the transmission and supply of energy. 'System slip at Salal affected over 50 percent of the electricity transmission', he said, adding that the snag was corrected after 4 hours of tiresome efforts by power engineers.
On September 11, the Power Chief Engineer said that the 33 KV transmission Gladni-Dhounthly line developed yet another fault due a conductor slip at Railway Crossing-Bahu Fort, which was repaired and thereafter the supply restored.
Mr. Pawar said that all the transmission lines and transformers have now been repaired and are in operation. He said but for the snags at Gladni and Salal, the department is committed to provide quality energy to the people. He also regretted the inconvenience caused to the general public because of slip at Gladni and Salal stations. He said that inclement weather conditions could again prevent the department from assuring smooth supply.
Joint Director Information supplied various inputs received from the public that complained of water and electricity supply in their respective localities.
